My two cents on Eagles vs. Buffalos (for a Gold IRA)
- •Been seeing a lot of chatter lately about whether American Gold Eagles or American Gold Buffalos are the "better" buy, especially for an IRA.
- •I started building this up about 8 years ago, right after I sold off my share in the dairy operation.
- •Felt good to diversify away from livestock, let me tell ya.
Been seeing a lot of chatter lately about whether American Gold Eagles or American Gold Buffalos are the "better" buy, especially for an IRA. As someone who's had a good chunk of my retirement in a Gold IRA for a while now – we’re talking north of $700k in physical gold and silver, mostly gold – I figured I’d throw my two cents in. I started building this up about 8 years ago, right after I sold off my share in the dairy operation. Felt good to diversify away from livestock, let me tell ya.
My advisor, who's a good ol' salt-of-the-earth type down in Milwaukee, always pushed me towards the Eagles initially. His rationale was the fractional options and the wider recognition. Most of my gold is in 1 oz Eagles, but I do have a few tubes of the 1/2 and 1/4 oz ones from when I first started out and was testing the waters. I gotta admit, those Saint-Gaudens designs are classic, and you just feel like you're holding something with history.
However, more recently I've been picking up Buffalos. The pure 24-karat is appealing to me now. It's less about the fractional divisibility and more about the simple purity. I get that some folks worry about dinging a 24k coin, but honestly, these things are sitting in a vault, not being handled much. I trust the storage facility to keep 'em safe. Plus, the Buffalo design is just straight-up gorgeous – feels a bit more "American West" to me, which resonates with my practical, midwestern sensibilities.
So, for those of you wrestling with this decision for your own Gold IRAs, what’s everyone else leaning towards these days? Are you sticking with the tried-and-true Eagles for the long haul, or are you like me and finding the Buffalos more attractive now? I’m 62 now and looking at retirement in a few years, so I'm thinking about maximizing simple value and less about liquidity for small amounts. From a pure bullion play, is the 24k worth the slightly higher premium some places charge for Buffalos? Let me know your thoughts!
