Okay, so I started my Gold IRA a few years back – probably around late 2020, early 2021. Put in about $75k into physical gold because, well, I’m a farmer’s wife here in Kansas City and we just understand tangible assets. My husband and I have always been about land and equipment, things you can touch. So gold felt right. But lately, I’ve been feeling a pull towards silver, and I actually started diverting some of my regular savings into physical silver bars and coins, separate from the IRA.

My strategy with silver is a bit different from my gold. With gold, it was more about a bedrock, long-term hedge. With silver, I’m treating it almost like a much longer-term savings account, but with the potential for bigger swings. I've probably got about $10-$12k in physical silver now, mostly 1oz American Silver Eagles and some 10oz bars. I try to grab a few ounces each month when I'm doing the weekly grocery run to Costco and see if they have any deals, or I'll buy online from a reputable dealer if the spot price looks good. It's almost become a little game for me!

I’m really trying to build up to a decent stack over the next 5-10 years. My husband thinks it's a little "extra" since we already have the gold, but I just have this gut feeling about silver's industrial demand and its role as a monetary metal. It feels undervalued compared to gold right now, and I just keep thinking about how much of it gets used up and can't be reused. What are some other folks' strategies for silver? Do you set specific price targets, or just try to accumulate consistently?

I’m also wondering about storage. For the gold, it’s in a pretty secure vault with the IRA custodian. For the silver, it's mostly at home in a safe, but it's getting heavy! I've been thinking about getting a larger, more robust safe specifically for my growing precious metals stash. Any recommendations for good home safes that aren't going to break the bank but still offer solid protection from fire and theft? Living out here, a good, heavy safe feels pretty essential.

Interesting thread! I just got my Gold IRA set up a few months back, finally pulling the trigger after years of thinking about it. My financial advisor here in Madison was pretty bullish on gold, but less so on silver for me, mostly due to storage costs and perceived volatility. For those of you who started with gold and branched into silver, what made you decide to add silver to the mix? Was it just a value play or something else?

Totally get this! My journey was a little different, but similar trajectory. Started with a bit of gold for diversification, mostly because my dad always hammered home "hard assets." Then I started digging into silver and realized the potential there. Now my ratio is probably 70/30 silver to gold. It just feels right.

That's an interesting shift! What made you decide to move entirely to silver after starting with gold? Was it a price point thing, or something else?

Totally get the appeal of silver, especially with the industrial demand. But man, late 2020/early 2021 was a pretty sweet time to get into gold, price-wise. Are you at all worried about missing out on the stability and potential upside of gold right now, especially with all the market weirdness?

Totally get the shift to silver. I started my precious metals journey with a significant chunk in gold, mostly because of the perceived stability and higher value density living in NYC – moving a few gold coins is a lot easier than silver if you ever needed to. However, after the first year, I started diversifying heavily into silver, especially when the gold-to-silver ratio hit extremes. It's often overlooked but has serious upside potential when things correct, and it feels good to hold more physical metal per dollar. My advice: keep an eye on that ratio; it’s a powerful indicator when thinking about rebalancing.

Dude, I hear you on the silver. I started my precious metals journey pretty much gold-only for years, thought silver was just for hording preppers. Got burned on a few stocks during COVID, then started digging deeper, and frankly, the resources here on GIRAB actually got me to reconsider my silver allocation. Now I'm sitting on a decent stack of peace dollars and some 10oz bars. Wish I hadn't been so stubborn way back when.

Dude, I hear you. I started with gold back in '17, mostly because everyone told me it was the 'safe' play. Had about 200k in my IRA, wanted some stability. But once I actually started looking at the physical vs. paper, and then the silver premiums last year... man, the leverage on silver just felt right. Still hold plenty of gold, but the silver is where I've been putting the new money. Been picking up Eagles like crazy lately.
