Okay, so I started my Gold IRA a few years back – probably around late 2020, early 2021. Put in about $75k into physical gold because, well, I’m a farmer’s wife here in Kansas City and we just understand tangible assets. My husband and I have always been about land and equipment, things you can touch. So gold felt right. But lately, I’ve been feeling a pull towards silver, and I actually started diverting some of my regular savings into physical silver bars and coins, separate from the IRA.
My strategy with silver is a bit different from my gold. With gold, it was more about a bedrock, long-term hedge. With silver, I’m treating it almost like a much longer-term savings account, but with the potential for bigger swings. I've probably got about $10-$12k in physical silver now, mostly 1oz American Silver Eagles and some 10oz bars. I try to grab a few ounces each month when I'm doing the weekly grocery run to Costco and see if they have any deals, or I'll buy online from a reputable dealer if the spot price looks good. It's almost become a little game for me!
I’m really trying to build up to a decent stack over the next 5-10 years. My husband thinks it's a little "extra" since we already have the gold, but I just have this gut feeling about silver's industrial demand and its role as a monetary metal. It feels undervalued compared to gold right now, and I just keep thinking about how much of it gets used up and can't be reused. What are some other folks' strategies for silver? Do you set specific price targets, or just try to accumulate consistently?
I’m also wondering about storage. For the gold, it’s in a pretty secure vault with the IRA custodian. For the silver, it's mostly at home in a safe, but it's getting heavy! I've been thinking about getting a larger, more robust safe specifically for my growing precious metals stash. Any recommendations for good home safes that aren't going to break the bank but still offer solid protection from fire and theft? Living out here, a good, heavy safe feels pretty essential.
