Been seeing a lot of talk here about gold in IRAs, which is great, but I wanted to throw my two cents in regarding silver. As a military retiree here in San Diego, financial security is something I've valued my entire adult life. Made good use of the TSP and some other investments over the years, but about five years ago, I started seriously looking into precious metals, especially for a portion of my rollover IRA funds. I'm currently sitting on a pretty decent portfolio, somewhere in the high end of the $250k-$500k range, and a good chunk of that, probably around 10-15%, is now in physical silver held in a Gold IRA.
My strategy has been pretty methodical. I'm not chasing pennies here, but I've been consistently adding recognized bullion – mostly American Silver Eagles and some Canadian Maples – whenever I see a dip in the spot price. I generally aim for a premium around 10-15% over spot, maybe a little more if it's a particularly good looking coin or a reputable dealer. I also keep an eye on the gold/silver ratio; when it gets really out of whack, favoring gold, I sometimes consider a small allocation to silver, thinking it's undervalued. It just feels... tangible, you know? Like actual wealth that isn't just numbers on a screen. That peace of mind is worth a lot to me.
I know some folks argue about the volatility of silver compared to gold, and yeah, I've seen it swing. But with the industrial demand and its role as a monetary metal, I honestly think it's got significant upside in the long run, especially as a hedge against inflation and economic uncertainty. Plus, accessing the actual metal through a Gold IRA custodian gives me that extra layer of security.
So, for those of you with Gold IRAs, are you also allocating a portion to physical silver? What's your reasoning? Are there any specific types of silver bullion you prefer for this kind of long-term hold? Always interested to hear other perspectives on this, especially from those who've been at it longer than I have.
