Thought I'd share a little bit about my silver stacking journey, especially for those considering diversifying their precious metals. I know this is a Gold IRA forum predominantly, but silver has been a significant part of my overall strategy, and I see it as having a place alongside my gold. My wife and I started seriously looking into precious metals about five years ago, right around the time I was running for mayor here in Boise. We decided to put about $15k into silver initially, mostly Eagles and Maple Leafs, and it's grown from there.
My motivation then, and now, is really about stability and a hedge against inflation. Being in local politics, you see firsthand how quickly things can change, and how fragile some of our financial systems can feel. We're not talking 'end of the world' stuff, but more about preparing for economic headwinds that could impact our community. I've been slowly adding to my silver holdings, mostly through direct purchases outside of my IRA. My Gold IRA is kept separate and is primarily for long-term growth and tax advantages, but I view silver as a more accessible, tangible asset that could be useful in more immediate, localized economic downturns. I've probably got about 300-400 ounces of physical silver now, stored securely, and that feels like a good buffer for our family.
One strategy I've been employing is dollar-cost averaging. I set aside a small amount each month specifically for silver, regardless of the spot price. It takes the emotion out of it and ensures I'm buying both high and low. I also really enjoy the community aspect of it – talking to other stackers, learning about different mints, and understanding the nuances of the market. It feels a lot more grounded than some of the more speculative investments out there. I know some folks just focus on gold, and that's totally valid. But for a ~75k portfolio like mine, I like having a sizable chunk in silver too. It feels like a more liquid asset if I ever needed to convert a smaller portion quickly without touching my Gold IRA.
I'm curious to hear if any of you have a similar strategy, mixing your Gold IRA with a separate physical silver stack? Or do you keep it all in one basket? What are your thoughts on silver's role in a broader precious metals portfolio for someone with a similar investment size?
