    The 3-step rollover process explained

Been a while since I've chimed in on the stacking journey. Got into silver around 2010 when the energy sector was... interesting, to say the least. Retired a few years back from a pretty good run in Houston oil & gas, and while a good chunk of my portfolio is in gold IRAs, I’ve always had a soft spot for physical silver. Started out buying mostly American Silver Eagles and Canadian Maples – just the standard stuff. Now I’ve branched out a bit.

My strategy for silver is a little different than my gold. Gold is my main hedge against inflation and a foundational part of my retirement portfolio, pushing into the multi-millions there. Silver, though, feels a bit more like a tangible, immediate asset for potential liquidity or even just holding onto a piece of history. I'm not talking 'prepper' levels here, but having physical assets outside of the banking system just makes sense to me, especially after watching a few economic cycles unfold over my career. I’ve probably got somewhere in the low to mid six figures tied up in silver now, mostly in 10oz and 100oz bars, plus a decent coin collection. I even dabble in some of the more artistic pieces now, which is a nice visual break from just stacks of bars.

I’ve kept a close eye on the gold/silver ratio, and honestly, that's been a big driver for when I decide to add more. When it gets stretched, I tend to lean harder into silver. It’s hard not to feel a bit of FOMO when gold is tearing, but I try to stick to my strategy. Storage is always a fun topic; I use a mix of home safe and a local depository. The thought of having that much metal sitting around just in the house makes me a little antsy, even with good security.

Curious what strategies others are using for their silver these days? Are you focused on numismatics, or just stacking straight bullion? And for those with substantial holdings, how are you handling storage and diversification within your precious metals? Always good to hear what other folks in the community are doing.

Good on you for making the pivot. I started my silver stack back in '08 when everyone else was still chasing tech. Wish I'd gotten in heavier then, but even what I did get proved to be a smart move. My advice? Don't forget about junk silver – pre-65 US coins. Bought a decent amount of those, and they've been surprisingly liquid and held their premium well over the years, especially when the spot price got volatile. Plus, they carry a certain historical appeal. Keep it up.

Totally relate to this! I started in tech in the late 90s, and saw some wild swings. Got into some precious metals around the same time you did, mostly as a hedge. It's truly comforting having that tangible asset, especially when you've seen industries go through massive changes. Congrats on the retirement, by the way!

That's an interesting jump, from petro to precious! Sounds like you've seen some wild swings in your time. When you say the energy sector was "interesting" around 2010, were you referring more to price volatility or geopolitical factors influencing the market back then?

That's an interesting path, especially starting with the energy sector. While gold IRAs are definitely the go-to for many, and for good reason, I've always found silver's industrial demand aspect a bit more compelling long-term, beyond just the "store of value" argument. Not saying gold isn't king, but silver feels like it has more room to run given its everyday utility. Just a thought!

Awesome to hear about your journey! Sounds like you've navigated some pretty interesting market conditions. Since you're already diversified with gold IRAs, have you ever looked into the IRS rules on what's permitted for precious metals in an IRA? It's a great resource to make sure all your stacking adheres to the guidelines, especially if you're thinking about adding more to those tax-advantaged accounts.

Good on ya for making the jump from oil and gas to silver! I was in a similar boat, had a fair chunk of my portfolio tied up in some *ahem* less-than-stable ventures down here in El Paso. Thought about going with a traditional advisor for some diversification, but honestly, their fees and lack of understanding when I brought up physical assets kinda put me off. GIRAB's insights on silver's role in the energy transition definitely sealed the deal for me.

Interesting thread, appreciate you sharing your journey. My gold allocation started small back in '08 when everyone else in Memphis was losing their mind over housing. One thing that really helped me visualize the long-term impact of inflation on different asset classes, especially precious metals vs. fiat, was this free historical asset return calculator from Portfolio Visualizer. It's not specific to gold or silver IRAs, but running scenarios through that thing for the last 50 years really hammered home the "why" behind holding physical.

Always interesting to hear about silver stacking. While I appreciate the sentiment, I've always viewed silver more as a speculative gamble than a bedrock investment, especially for retirement. Compared to gold, its industrial demand makes it far more volatile, and for my Gold IRA in Savannah, I'm aiming for stability. The Gold vs Stocks 10-year chart on this site really puts the enduring strength of gold into perspective for me, showing why I rarely stray from it for my main IRA holdings.
