Been in the precious metals game for a while, both personally and professionally – own a jewelry shop here in Providence. Started my Gold IRA some years back, mainly with Eagles and Maples, but my silver stacking has taken a slightly different turn. For a while, I was all about just getting as much weight as possible. You know, buffalo rounds, generic bars, whatever got me closest to spot. Had about 800 ounces at one point, just a big pile of shiny stuff.
Then, about two years ago, I started seeing some beautiful older coins come through the shop – pre-64 stuff, some specific proof sets, even some really nice circulated dollars. I know the bullion value is there, but man, the numismatic appeal really hit me. I've always appreciated craftsmanship, and some of these pieces are just tiny works of art. So, I started pivoting my strategy. Instead of just buying whatever was cheapest, I began looking for specific pieces with collector value. I’m thinking 1921 Peace Dollars, especially if I can find them in good condition, or Mercury Dimes with sharp details. Even some of the older commemoratives have caught my eye.
It's definitely a slower build. Instead of dropping a few thousand on 100oz of bars, I might spend that same amount on a handful of really nice graded coins. My personal stack is probably closer to 500 ounces now, but the per-ounce value, if you factor in the numismatic premium, feels a lot higher. Plus, it's just more enjoyable to collect. I love looking at them, researching their history. It scratches that collecting itch I've had since I was a kid.
I know some people only stack for weight, and that's totally valid – especially with a bigger portfolio. But for my personal stash, this numismatic approach feels right. Do any of you guys blend your strategies like this? Or is it purely a spot price game for you?
