Been seeing a lot of new folks asking about silver lately, which is awesome. Figured I’d share a bit about my own journey, especially since I'm pretty heavy in it. Started really getting into silver back in '08 when things felt… unstable, to say the least. My initial thought was just physical, something tangible. My business had taken a hit, and I just wanted a hedge against the kind of uncertainty that makes you want to pull your hair out. So, I started with rounds and bars, mostly from local dealers here in Scottsdale and some online. It felt good, seeing that stack grow, knowing it was mine.

My strategy since then has evolved quite a bit. What started as pure physical stacking expanded into a substantial Silver IRA, especially after I sold off a substantial portion of one of my companies a few years back. The tax advantages there were a no-brainer for a chunk of those profits. Looking at my current portfolio, roughly 30% is in physical silver (mostly 10oz and 100oz bars these days, easy to store and verify), another 20% in my Silver IRA, and then about 10% in gold, mostly through a Gold IRA. The remaining 40% is in real estate and some more traditional investments. It’s comforting having that much real assets, especially when the market does its usual rollercoaster thing. Anyone else find themselves heavily weighted towards physical after a big liquidity event?

I’m constantly refining my entry points. I don’t believe in timing the market perfectly, but I do look for dips, or when the gold/silver ratio gets out of whack. For the IRA portion, I'm pretty hands-off after the initial purchases – it’s a long-term play. But with my physical stack, I do a bit of opportunistic buying. For those of you just starting, or contemplating getting into a Silver IRA, make sure you understand the tax implications of everything. I used the Tax Calculator a bunch when I was figuring out rolling over and contribution limits for my own situation; it was a really useful tool for visualizing the impact. It's crazy how much an extra few points in tax savings can add up over time when you're dealing with seven-figure portfolios.

Emotionally, having this much in precious metals brings a real sense of security. It’s not just about the monetary value; it's the peace of mind. As an entrepreneur, I'm used to risk, but this feels different – it’s a bedrock. My biggest concern going forward is always storage and liquidity for the physical stuff if I ever needed a substantial amount quickly. Any thoughts on improving liquidity for large physical holdings without getting hosed on premiums or having to ship stuff across the country?

Glad to hear your journey has worked out so far! While it's great to see new interest in silver, I do wonder if some of the "instability" from '08 that drew people in might be overstated as a long-term driver for gold, specifically. Silver has its own unique market dynamics that don't always mirror gold's 'safe haven' status, and while both have inflation-hedging properties, their industrial demand can make silver more volatile.

For those looking purely at wealth preservation and hedging against systemic risk, focusing solely on silver might introduce more speculation than some are comfortable with compared to a gold-heavy approach. Just something to consider for the newer stackers reading!

Totally relate to this! I started around the same time, maybe a year or two later, but the "unstable" feeling was definitely my primary motivator. Had a buddy who was already stacking and he convinced me to dip my toes in. Glad I did – for peace of mind, if nothing else. It's wild to look back and see how things have shifted.

Hey, cool to hear your story! Been thinking about getting into silver myself. You mentioned starting with just physical – did you ever branch out into silver ETFs or mining stocks, or have you stuck purely to the physical metal?

Hey, awesome to hear your journey! '08 was definitely a wake-up call for a lot of people. For anyone just starting out, a good tip I picked up was to always check the premiums carefully. Sometimes the spot price looks good, but the premium eats away at your potential gains, especially on smaller fractional pieces.

I found APMEX's guide on understanding premiums pretty helpful when I was first getting into it. Good luck to all the new stackers out there!

Totally agree with your assessment. The '08 crash was what got me into precious metals too, albeit on a much smaller scale at first. Started with a few ounces of silver eagles and then slowly branched out. It's definitely a long game, but I've been happy with the stability it brings to my portfolio.

Interesting take. I've heard the opposite from a few people though — would love to see some actual numbers on this.

Genuinely curious — has anyone here actually tried to liquidate from their gold IRA? How smooth was that process?
