Been on this journey for about 7 years now, since I retired from Hickam. Started out slow, just a few hundred bucks here and there into some junk silver and a few proof eagles. My buddy from the squadron kept bugging me about it, saying it was the only real money. I was skeptical, but with all the money printing after '08, and seeing how things were shaping up in the Pacific, I figured it couldn't hurt to diversify a bit.
My strategy really picked up steam around 2018. That’s when I started shifting a good chunk of my pension and some savings into silver. I'm looking at around $150k in physical silver now, mostly 1oz coins and some 10oz bars. No fancy numismatics, just pure weight. My philosophy is pretty simple: global instability is a given, especially looking at the current geopolitical chessboard from this side of the world. Silver, and then gold, feels like a solid lifeboat. I've seen too many economic tides turn in my lifetime to trust all my eggs in fiat baskets. The recent surge has been nice, but I’m really playing the long game here.
I store most of it offshore, honestly. The rest is in a secure vault here in Honolulu. Call me paranoid, but after what I’ve witnessed, I like having options. I'm starting to eye up gold now, transitioning some of the gains into that. Thinking about rolling over a significant portion of my IRA into a Gold IRA. When it comes to the tax implications of liquidating some of this silver for gold, I plan to use that Tax Calculator tool to get a clearer picture. Has anyone here used that before for similar moves?
What are your thoughts on transitioning from a silver-heavy stack to more gold? I’m looking at putting about $250k into a Gold IRA eventually. Any specific dealers or custodians you'd recommend that cater to higher-value accounts? Also, for those in a similar boat, how do you handle the emotional side of seeing your holdings fluctuate? Sometimes it feels like watching a rollercoaster, even when you know it's a long-term play.
