Okay, so I mostly lurk here, but thought I'd share a bit about my silver stacking. I know this is a Gold IRA sub, and I do have gold in my IRA, but I also love my physical silver stack. It's not nearly as big as some of the monsters I see posted, but I'm proud of it. I started about four years ago, just after I took over as principal at the high school here in Little Rock. I had about $100k in my regular retirement accounts, but after teaching financial literacy classes and seeing some of the market volatility, I really wanted something more tangible.

My strategy has been pretty simple: dollar-cost averaging every month. I aim to put about $200-$300 into silver, mostly 1oz American Silver Eagles, but I've picked up some generics and even a few Kookaburras when the premium was right. I usually buy from a local dealer down on University Ave, but sometimes I'll snag something online if there's a good deal. I've got around 150 ounces now, slowly but surely. It's a nice feeling, seeing that weight grow in the safe. My wife jokes that it's my "prepper stash," but it's really just diversification and a hedge against inflation to me.

I got into gold first, honestly. I rolled over about $30k from an old 401k into a Gold IRA a few years back, which really opened my eyes to tangible assets. That move felt like such a secure step for my long-term retirement, especially given my age now (mid-50s). The silver stacking sort of grew out of that same mindset but as a more accessible, hands-on way to add to my precious metals holdings without touching my actual IRA funds. It’s less about huge gains and more about preserving purchasing power and having some physical wealth outside of the financial system.

Anyone else here blend their Gold IRA strategy with a physical silver stack? What's your reasoning? And for those of you with bigger stacks, any advice on storage beyond a home safe when it gets to a certain size?

Totally with you on the silver stacking, especially as a hedge alongside the gold. I started really getting into silver in '08 when the gold-to-silver ratio was bonkers. Picked up a ton of Eagles and Maples when silver was still under $15. Wish I'd bought even more, but diversification felt right then, and it really paid off.

Hey, I hear you on the silver stacking! While my IRA is gold-heavy, I've also been building up my physical silver for a few years now. It's just... more accessible sometimes, and I love the tangible aspect of it. Funny how it starts with a few coins and then suddenly you have a whole system going, right?

Hey, that's awesome! Always cool to see what other people are doing with their precious metals outside of the "traditional" IRA stuff. You mentioned you started about four years ago – was that around the time you got your Gold IRA set up too, or did one predate the other significantly?

Totally get the appeal of silver, it's fun to stack and the price point makes it accessible. But for an IRA, focusing on gold just seems like the smarter long-term play. Silver can be pretty volatile, and while it definitely has its moments, I tend to view it more as a speculative bet than a bedrock retirement asset like gold. Different strokes, I guess, but my IRA is strictly a gold zone.

This is a great thread, really resonates. I started with silver years ago, stacking Eagles mostly, mainly as a hedge against the fiat printer going brrr. Honestly, after seeing the precious metal IRAs open up, my silver stack felt a bit like a side hobby. The cost to store and insure a significant amount just didn't make sense for me long-term outside of a secure IRA. Moving some of that value into a Gold IRA felt like the natural evolution.

Interesting post. I've been mostly focused on gold for my IRA, given the larger sums I'm moving, but this really makes me think about silver as a complementary asset. My initial thought was always just to stick with physical gold for its stability, but the industrial demand aspect for silver is something I'm learning more about. Any thoughts on how much of a portfolio (say, $1M+) a newbie to silver should realistically allocate without overdoing it, especially if the primary goal is still wealth preservation?

I've been in a similar boat, looking to diversify beyond just gold in my IRA. Started with a good chunk in physical gold, maybe around $150k, but thinking about adding some silver this year. What really helped me pinpoint a good provider that handles both effectively was the Best Gold IRA Companies comparison on the Gold IRA Blueprint site – definitely check that out; it breaks down the fees and storage options clearly. It's a lifesaver for avoiding those junk fees.

Man, this thread really resonates. I remember back in '08, when everything was going south and my 401k took a beating, I started looking into anything tangible. Not even Gold IRA specific back then, just raw survival instinct kicking in. My neighbor, old Ernie, used to stack silver Eagles and maples, telling me "gold for wealth preservation, silver for when things really hit the fan." I scoffed then, thinking he was a prepper lunatic. Fast forward to 2012, I had about $50k in a fairly diversified portfolio, but still feeling uneasy about the market's volatility. I finally dipped my toes into silver, mostly pre-1965 junk silver coins, just as a hedge. Picked up about 500 face value in dimes and quarters from a local coin shop here in Fresno. The premium was a bit high, but the idea of holding something real felt good. It wasn't about getting rich, but about having *something* outside the banking system. When gold really took off a couple years later, I regretted not going harder into that, but the silver was a good psychological bridge for me. Definitely glad I started somewhere.

That's a solid approach, especially using silver as your primary physical hedge outside the IRA. I've been doing something similar here in Spokane, though I lean a bit heavier into gold in my IRA, partly because my initial investment was larger. My rule of thumb for physical silver outside the IRA is to buy enough to cover ~6 months of essential expenses if the fiat system decides to go sideways. It's not about getting rich, it's about holding real value.

Honestly, I've got a decent chunk in physical gold myself – enough to feel comfortable with my portfolio's real asset exposure. But this whole "silver stacking" for *wealth preservation* still feels... off. Sure, industrial demand is cool, but a 100k stack of silver vs. the equivalent in gold just screams "liquidation nightmare" if things ever really go sideways. Happy to be proven wrong, but the sheer bulk and lower value density make me hesitant to call it a true Gold IRA *alternative* for serious diversification.

This thread hit home for me, especially the part about diversification beyond just gold. I'm based in Tampa, and for years, my retirement strategy was pretty vanilla – mostly mutual funds and a small percentage in tech stocks. Then 2008 happened, and while I didn't lose *everything*, it was a wake-up call. I started looking into tangibles, and that's when I learned about Gold IRAs. My first jump was into gold, buying into a Gold IRA with Augusta Precious Metals. They were solid, good customer service, but I was still hesitant about purely physical storage at home, especially with the hurricane risks down here. For the Gold IRA, obviously, it's stored securely, but for additional silver beyond that, I wanted some in my immediate possession. My silver stacking journey started about five years ago, after I’d already put about 150k into my Gold IRA. I didn't want to put all my eggs in one precious metal basket, even a diversified one. I started small, just a few American Silver Eagles here and there from a local coin shop near USF. My initial strategy was just to accumulate, treating it almost like a savings account

@Gary Stewart, you hit the nail on the head. '08 was a real wake-up call for many of us. I remember watching my paper gains evaporate faster than a puddle in the San Diego summer, and that's when I really buckled down on tangible assets. It wasn't about getting rich quick, but more about not getting wiped out when the next storm hit. My first substantial gold buy wasn't for an IRA, it was a few kilos of silver just to have something *real* outside the system.
