I’ve been stacking precious metals for over 20 years now, and like many out there, I started with silver. Back in the late 90s, when I was still working on the line at Ford here in Detroit – those early days felt like chasing pennies, sometimes literally. I remember buying bags of junk silver dimes and quarters when they were still pretty cheap. I probably accumulated a solid 1,000 ounces over my first five years, mostly walking liberty halves and Eagles.
My portfolio is now sitting comfortably between the $500k and $1M mark, largely thanks to my shift into gold about 15 years ago. The decision to pivot to gold felt like moving from a smaller boat to a battleship for me. Gold just seemed to offer that extra layer of stability and growth potential for the kind of capital I was looking to protect as I moved closer to retirement. My Gold IRA is now the backbone of my retirement plan, and it's performed exactly as I'd hoped, especially with all the economic uncertainty we've seen since the financial crisis.
However, I still have a decent stack of silver – probably around 3,000 ounces now – and part of me feels like I should be doing more with it. It’s mostly in 10oz and 100oz bars, plus some remaining Eagles. I’m torn. Do I keep holding these silver assets, hoping for a significant spike? Or should I be considering converting some of it to more gold, diversifying into a different asset class entirely, or even just leaving it to my grandkids? It feels like the growth potential of silver, while present, isn't as robust as gold, especially with larger sums. What are your strategies for silver at this stage, especially if you're holding a substantial amount?
