Been seeing a lot of new stackers pop up here lately, and it got me thinking about my own journey with silver. I’ve been in the gold game for close to 15 years now, mostly through a Gold IRA, and that’s been my bread and butter – currently sitting on a pretty solid half-mil in that. But silver… silver was a much tougher sell for me initially. For years, I just didn’t see the point. Gold was the real store of value, the inflation hedge. Silver felt like the little brother, more volatile, less "serious."
What changed my mind was honestly a combination of watching the gold/silver ratio and getting a bit more clued into industrial demand. About 8 years ago, when I was still waist-deep in the energy sector here in Dallas, I started dabbling. Bought some American Silver Eagles, just to see how it felt. No big crazy purchases, maybe $10-$20k worth over the first couple of years. It really forced me to diversify my thinking beyond just gold, which was a good thing. Now, I’ve probably got around $75-100k in physical silver spread across various forms – mostly eagles and some junk silver for the "survival" aspect, but also a few bars.
My strategy today is pretty simple: I view silver as the higher-upside, higher-volatility play. It's not my primary hedge, that's still gold, but it's a significant component of my physical metals holdings outside the IRA. I'm still buying on dips, usually if I see the spot price drop below what I consider a good entry point. I’m not chasing anything, just adding slowly and steadily. My biggest regret is probably not going harder in 2020/2021 when things got really interesting, but hindsight is 20/20, right?
How have you all approached silver in your portfolios? Is it a minor addition, or do you dedicate a significant chunk to it? I’m always curious to hear what other experienced investors are doing, especially with all the talk about industrial demand and potential supply crunches.
