Okay, so I've been running my jewelry store here in Providence for going on 25 years now, and I practically live and breathe precious metals. I've got a good chunk of my personal savings in gold and silver, always have. A few years back, when I decided to roll over about 75k from an old 401k into a Gold IRA, I wrestled with the Roth vs. Traditional decision for ages.
Ultimately, I went with the Roth Gold IRA, converting those funds. My logic at the time was that with gold (and silver, which I also hold a good amount of outside the IRA) being a long-term play, and with my income likely higher now than it will be in retirement, paying the taxes upfront made sense. I figured the potential for tax-free growth on my actual physical gold and silver bars and coins was a huge advantage down the road. I'm 55 now, so I'm looking at another 10-15 years potentially before I start drawing anything.
I've seen some decent appreciation on my holdings, especially with silver bars getting some traction lately. The account itself is managed by a custodian, and I store the physical metal at a depository just outside of Boston. It’s comforting knowing it’s there, tangible, and not just numbers on a screen. But occasionally I wonder, did I miss out on the immediate tax deduction of a Traditional Gold IRA? That 75k would've been a nice deduction that year.
For those of you with Roth Gold IRAs, are you happy with your choice? Did anyone here go Traditional and have any regrets, or are you loving the deferred tax benefits? I literally talk about ounces and karats all day, but when it comes to the retirement account structure, there's always that nagging "what if."
