Just wrapped up my rollover from an old 401k into a Gold IRA with Augusta Precious Metals. Took me a good chunk of change, close to $400k, from an old account with a dairy supplier I used to work for down in Beloit. Been in the dairy game my whole life, you learn pretty quick that you can’t trust paper for everything. Saw too many folks get burned over the years, so this felt like a practical move for long-term security, especially with all the talk about inflation and whatnot.
The process itself was smoother than I expected, honestly. My main concern was the tax implications and making sure I didn't mess anything up and end up owing Uncle Sam a ton. Augusta had a rep, Sarah, who walked me through it all. She was patient, which I appreciated. Not overly pushy like some of the other companies I talked to. They explained the direct rollover concept pretty clearly, and it seemed like the most straightforward way to go for my situation. The actual transfer from the old custodian to the new one (Equity Trust, in my case) took about three weeks start to finish. That felt a little long, but I guess it’s a big chunk of money, so better safe than sorry.
The physical delivery of the metals to the depository (Delaware Depository, for me) was all handled by Augusta. Didn't have to lift a finger there, which was a relief. I ended up mostly with American Gold Eagles, a mix of 1/2 oz and 1 oz coins. Seemed like a solid, recognizable asset. What did surprise me a little was the premium on the coins. It was a bit higher than I anticipated, but I suppose that's the cost of doing business and getting a tangible asset. I'm not looking to trade this stuff daily, so I’m focused on the long-term hedge.
Anyone else here go through a similar process recently? What were your biggest takeaways or surprises? Curious to hear if my experience lines up with others, especially on the premium side of things. Also, for those further along, any advice on when to consider rebalancing or adding more if things get even crazier?
