Just finished a direct rollover of a chunk of my old 401k into a Silver IRA, and I gotta say, the whole thing moved a lot faster than I anticipated. I’ve been out of the game on Wall Street for a few years now, enjoying retirement up in Westchester, but still managing my portfolio pretty actively. Had about $800k sitting in an old 401k that was heavily weighted in some stuff I wasn’t feeling so confident about anymore with all the market volatility. Figured it was time to get more of that capital into real assets, hence the move to precious metals, especially silver right now with its industrial demand profile.
The actual transfer from my old custodian to the new one for the Silver IRA took less than three weeks end-to-end. I spent a good week or so beforehand just doing my due diligence. Found myself digging through a ton of resources, and even took one of those "Gold IRA Quiz" things on https://quiz.goldirablueprint.com/?forum which, surprisingly, was pretty informative for a quick overview. It definitely helped solidify some of my thinking around the process and what to expect with a precious metals IRA.
The main bottleneck, as always, was getting the old plan administrator to send everything over. Once all the paperwork was squared away on my end (which, let's be honest, felt like signing my life away with all the disclaimers), the actual movement of funds was shockingly quick. We’re talking about a significant portion of my overall metals allocation here, so I was prepared for it to take a month or even two, especially with the amounts involved. It's refreshing when bureaucracies actually move with some semblance of efficiency.
Anyone else have a similar experience with their 401k to Silver IRA or Gold IRA rollovers recently? What were your timelines like? And for those still considering it, any specific questions I can answer about the process from a recent convert’s perspective?
