My recent 401k to Gold IRA rollover - smooth but nerve-wracking!
- •The initial conversations with the custodian were seamless, which is always a good sign.
- •They were pretty quick on the paperwork, and I had everything signed and sent back within a week.
- •The whole process took about 3.5 weeks from initial contact to the actual metals being allocated.
Just wrapped up my second 401k rollover into a Gold IRA account, and honestly, even after 15 years in the game, it still gets my blood pressure up a little. This time around, I moved about $350k from an old company 401k – the one from my engineering days before I semi-retired from the oil patch a few years back. The initial conversations with the custodian were seamless, which is always a good sign. They were pretty quick on the paperwork, and I had everything signed and sent back within a week.
The whole process took about 3.5 weeks from initial contact to the actual metals being allocated. Not bad, right? The biggest hurdle, as usual, was getting the old 401k administrator to play ball. They always seem to drag their feet, like they’re personally offended you’re taking your money elsewhere. Had to make a few follow-up calls to light a fire under them, but once the funds were released, everything else was a cakewalk. I’m primarily focused on Krugerrands and Canadian Maples – always have been, always will be. They’ve proven their stability over the years, especially through the market choppiness we’ve seen.
It brings my total metals allocation in my IRA to just over $800k now, which feels like a good position to be in. Being based here in Dallas, I’ve seen firsthand how quickly things can change in the economy, and having that tangible asset provides a real sense of security. My first rollover, nearly a decade ago, was for about $200k, and the world felt a lot different then. It's wild to look back and see how much has shifted.
Anyone else just complete a rollover recently? What was your experience like? Any nasty surprises, or was it smooth sailing? Also, for anyone looking to learn more about the whole process, I've found the Learning Center over at Gold IRA Blueprint to be a really solid resource. I still pop over there to check articles from time to time, even with my experience. It’s got some great in-depth guides and explanations.
