Hey everyone, William Davis here. Hope you're all doing well. Got my latest Gold IRA storage invoice yesterday from my custodian, and I gotta say, it raised an eyebrow or two. I’ve been in the gold game for about 15 years now, mostly physical, some paper, and as many of you know, I started moving a significant chunk of my portfolio into a Gold IRA about 7 years ago when oil prices started getting a bit too volatile for my liking. My account is sitting pretty decent right now, hovering around the $850k mark in physical gold, just under my million-dollar goal.
Typically, my storage fees are pretty consistent, around 0.15% annually for segregated storage with my current provider. It’s always been pretty reliable. However, this most recent bill jumped to 0.18%. Now, 0.03% might not sound like a lot on paper, but when you’re talking about nearly a million dollars in assets, that’s an extra $250-300 a year. It’s not going to break the bank, but it makes me wonder if this is a sign of things to come. I also noticed they tacked on a "new security protocol" fee that wasn't there before, an additional $50.
I’ve always been a big proponent of segregated storage – had a buddy back in '08 who learned the hard way about commingled storage when his custodian went under. Ever since then, I'm all about knowing exactly where my individual bars are. But these increases are starting to make me rethink my options a bit.
So, I wanted to open it up to the forum. Has anyone else seen their storage fees increase recently? Are you sticking with segregated storage, or have you considered moving to commingled to save a few bucks? My current custodian is one of the larger ones, but I'm curious if smaller, perhaps local, depositories offer more competitive rates. What are your thoughts on annual audits, and do you feel you're getting value for your current storage costs? I’m always learning, so any insights would be greatly appreciated!
