My inherited IRA to Gold - a long-term play for stability
- •I decided to move about $100k of it into gold.
- •Found a solid custodian who handles precious metals IRAs and they walked me through everything.
- •I'm based out of Portland, so I was able to even visit the vault facility (virtually, of course) to get some peace of mind.
Just closed the deal on converting a chunk of an inherited IRA into physical gold, specifically some nice 1oz American Gold Eagles and Canadian Maples. I know some of you are probably thinking it's a boomer move, but honestly, after being a bank manager for years, I've seen enough market volatility to make me want to diversify away from just paper assets. Dad left me about $350k in that IRA, and while it was doing okay, the thought of having it all tied up in stocks, especially with everything going on globally, just didn't sit right.
I decided to move about $100k of it into gold. The process for an inherited IRA conversion wasn't too bad, just a few extra hoops compared to a regular IRA, mostly due to RMDs and making sure it was done as a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer to avoid any taxable distributions. Found a solid custodian who handles precious metals IRAs and they walked me through everything. I'm based out of Portland, so I was able to even visit the vault facility (virtually, of course) to get some peace of mind. It's not about trying to get rich quick with gold, it's about protecting what's already there and having a hedge against inflation and economic uncertainty.
I’ve always been a big believer in not having all your eggs in one basket, and gold rounds feel like a tangible, historically reliable asset. While I’m still heavy in stocks with the rest of my portfolio (sitting around $400k total), this gold allocation makes me sleep a lot better. I actually used that "Gold vs Stocks Comparison" tool over at goldvsstocks.goldirablueprint.com/?period=10Y to really dig into the long-term performance. It’s pretty eye-opening to see how gold stacks up over different periods, especially against some of the big indices. For me, it reinforced the idea that a little bit of physical diversification isn’t just smart, it’s essential.
Anyone else here moved inherited IRA funds into gold? Or thinking about it? What were your biggest concerns or takeaways? Always interested to hear other people's experiences and strategies.
