My inheritance + gold: a killer combo?

So, my uncle passed last year, and left me a pretty hefty inherited IRA. We're talking something in the neighborhood of $2.5 million. He was a smart guy, always diversified, but most of his holdings were in traditional stocks and bonds. With everything going on in the markets lately, I've been feeling a little antsy about just letting that sit there, exposed to all the whims of the Fed and whatever else is brewing globally.
I've already got a good chunk of my own assets in physical gold and silver, both through some direct purchases and a couple of other Gold IRAs I set up a few years back. For years, my real estate developments in the Aspen area have been my bread and butter, but diversifying into precious metals has been a smart move for protecting capital. It's just made sense as a hedge, especially when I see the kind of inflation we've been dealing with. I’m seriously considering rolling a significant portion of this inherited IRA into a gold IRA to further secure that capital, especially since the required minimum distributions (RMDs) are coming into play sooner than I'd like on this thing.
Has anyone here gone through the process of converting a substantial inherited IRA into a Gold IRA? What were the biggest hurdles? Did you face any unexpected tax implications beyond the usual RMD stuff? I've been doing my homework, and it seems like a solid strategy for preservation, but I’m always keen to hear real-world experiences. I ran a quick check on the Eligibility Checker – seems like I qualify, which is good to know.
My biggest concern is making sure I navigate the RMDs correctly while also getting the right metal allocation. I'm thinking of going heavy on gold bullion, maybe some platinum, but I'm open to other ideas. Any specific custodians you'd recommend or warn against for larger accounts like this? Really appreciate any insights or war stories you guys have. Always learning from this community.
