Just wrapped up my 401k to Gold IRA rollover with Augusta Precious Metals and wanted to share my experience. I've been eyeing this for a while, especially with all the market craziness lately. My portfolio is in the $750k range, and honestly, the tech world here in Austin has been great for my investments, but it also feels incredibly exposed to every little hiccup in the economy. Diversification isn't just a buzzword anymore, it's a necessity.
My old 401k was primarily in a mix of mutual funds and some individual tech stocks – you know, the usual. I decided to move about $200k into a Gold IRA. The process itself was surprisingly straightforward. I initially had a consultation with Augusta, and they walked me through everything from setting up the new IRA account to coordinating with my old 401k administrator. I was expecting a bureaucratic nightmare, but it was much smoother than I anticipated. They even helped with the custodian setup, which was a relief since that’s a whole other layer of complexity I didn't want to deal with.
The actual transfer of funds took about three weeks, which felt a bit long, but they kept me informed the whole way. Once the funds hit the new custodian, selecting the actual metals was pretty quick. Went with a mix of gold and some silver. The rep I worked with was pretty knowledgeable without being overly pushy, which I appreciated. I'm viewing this as a long-term hedge, not a get-rich-quick scheme, so I wasn't looking for aggressive sales tactics.
Anyone else here go with Augusta? Or have different experiences with other companies during a rollover? Curious to hear if my experience is typical. Also, for those who've held physical gold for a while, any tips on what to keep an eye on, beyond just the spot price? I'm relatively new to this specific asset class, and eager to learn from more seasoned investors.
