My Gold IRA Rollover - From 401k to Physical Gold (Boise Perspective)
- •Just wanted to share my experience with rolling over a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, especially for anyone else considering it.
- •I pulled about $75k out of my previous employer's 401k that had been just sitting there since I became mayor here in Boise.

Just wanted to share my experience with rolling over a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, especially for anyone else considering it. I pulled about $75k out of my previous employer's 401k that had been just sitting there since I became mayor here in Boise. It felt good to finally get that money working in a way that aligns more with my community-focused investment philosophy.
The process itself was surprisingly straightforward. I picked a custodian after doing a ton of research – wanted somebody who had a good reputation and wasn't going to hit me with crazy fees. They handled most of the paperwork, which was a huge relief, honestly. My main concern was making sure the physical gold was stored securely here in the US, and they offered a few options. I went with segregated storage, even though it costs a little bit more, just for that extra peace of mind knowing my specific bars are accounted for.
Emotionally, it feels different than just seeing numbers on a screen with mutual funds. Holding a physical asset in my retirement portfolio just feels more substantial, more real, especially with all the economic uncertainty floating around lately. As a public servant, I'm always thinking about stability and protecting what we have, and this feels like a responsible step in that direction for my own finances. Anyone else feel that way after making a similar move?
I'm curious to hear from others who have gone through this. What were your biggest takeaways or anything you'd do differently? I'm still relatively new to the gold IRA world, and while I feel good about my decision, I always appreciate learning from other investors.
