Figured I'd share my experience with rolling over my old 401k into a Gold IRA. Been lurking here for a while, appreciated a lot of the advice, so thought I'd contribute. I've got a decent chunk of change, somewhere north of $700k in my portfolio, and a good portion of that was sitting in a 401k from a previous company. With the logistics business I’ve built here in Memphis, I’m starting to think about succession planning in the next 5-10 years, and honestly, the market volatility lately has made me pretty uneasy about having all my eggs in typical paper assets.
The process itself wasn't too bad, surprisingly. I worked with a firm that specialized in precious metals IRAs. They guided me through the paperwork for the rollover – essentially a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer, so I never actually touched the funds myself, which was a relief for tax purposes. It took about three weeks from the initial call to seeing the gold allocated to my account. They helped me choose the specific coins and bars, focused on the common investment-grade stuff like American Gold Eagles and Canadian Maple Leafs. It's a weight off my mind knowing I've got tangible assets now, especially with all the talk about inflation and currency debasement. Call me old-fashioned, but I really believe in owning something real.
My biggest concern going into it was the fees, of course. Storage, setup, annual maintenance – it all adds up. I made sure to get a clear breakdown from a few different providers before committing. It’s not cheap by any means compared to just leaving it in a basic ETF, but for the peace of mind and diversification, I feel it’s worth it. For me, it's about protecting wealth, not necessarily trying to get rich quick. I've got other investments for growth, but this portion of my portfolio is about stability.
Anyone else here in a similar boat, especially business owners thinking about long-term asset protection? What were your considerations? Also, for those who've done this, any surprises down the road that I should be aware of regarding custodians or storage? Would love to hear some other perspectives.
