My Gold IRA Rollover Experience from a 401k (and some thoughts)

Just wrapped up a rollover from my old 401k into a Gold IRA, and thought I'd share my experience for anyone considering it. I had about $300k sitting in an old employer's 401k from my residency days that I just never got around to moving. Being a doctor, I'm pretty risk-averse when it comes to retirement, especially with everything going on these days. My overall portfolio is fairly diversified, but I really wanted to get some more physical assets in there, specifically gold.
The process itself was surprisingly straightforward, though it felt like a lot of paperwork at the time. I worked with a pretty reputable Gold IRA company (did a ton of research, as anyone in Boston knows, we're meticulous!) and they guided me through every step. The direct rollover was definitely the way to go to avoid any tax implications. The actual transfer took about 3 weeks from start to finish, which was a little longer than I expected but not terrible. Seeing that physical gold stored away provides a level of comfort that I just don't get from staring at stock tickers all day. Is anyone else feeling this increased need for tangible assets lately?
One thing that really solidified this decision for me was looking at the historical performance comparisons. I spent a good amount of time on tools like the Gold vs Stocks Comparison on Gold IRA Blueprint, especially looking at the 10-year period. While stocks have obviously had some incredible runs, gold's consistent role as a hedge, especially during economic uncertainty, really stands out. For someone closer to retirement like me (mid-50s), capital preservation is becoming just as important as growth, if not more so.
So, for those of you with old 401ks gathering dust, or just looking to diversify away from just stocks and bonds, a Gold IRA is definitely worth investigating. I'm pretty happy with my decision so far. Anyone else here in MA make a similar move recently? What were your biggest takeaways or challenges?
