I've been thinking a lot about my Gold IRA lately, especially with all the CPI reports and general market jitters. As a professor here in Richmond, my research instinct kicks in, and I'm always digging into the data. My retirement portfolio, sitting around $380k right now, has a decent chunk (about 12%) in physical gold within my self-directed IRA. For me, that’s about $45k invested directly in bullion, not GLD or anything like that. The idea was always to have a real tangible asset as an inflation hedge, sort of a bedrock against currency debasement or market volatility, especially as I inch closer to the 40-year mark. It felt like a smart, defensive play based on historical trends.
But lately, I’m wondering if I’m missing something or if I should be adjusting my strategy. While gold has held its own, and has been a decent inflation protector over the long run, I'm not seeing the explosive gains some might expect given current inflation numbers. Granted, it's not a growth stock, and my primary goal for this allocation is capital preservation and downside protection, not exponential returns. However, with talks of "stagflation" becoming more frequent, I start to second-guess if my allocation is optimal. Is it truly the best hedge right now, or are there other assets I should be considering to further insulate my portfolio against rising costs?
I’m curious to hear from others in similar situations. For those of you with significant portions of your retirement or investment portfolios dedicated to gold for inflation protection, what’s your current outlook? Are you holding steady, increasing your allocation, or even diversifying into other inflation-resistant assets? I've dabbled in REITs before, but the current commercial real estate climate makes me a bit wary of anything beyond publicly traded, highly diversified funds.
Specifically, for those of you who are also research-driven, what metrics or indicators are you tracking that influence your decisions around gold and inflation? Do you focus more on M2 money supply, federal debt, or commodities futures? My current allocation feels solid, but I'm always open to refining my approach. Any thoughts or strategies from this community would be greatly appreciated!
