Just wanted to share my experience with rolling over a chunk of my old 401k into a new Gold IRA. As a small business owner here in Denver, I've always been a bit hands-on with my investments, but this was a whole new beast for me. I've been hearing a lot about inflation and market volatility, and honestly, the thought of having all my retirement eggs in paper assets was starting to keep me up at night. I decided to diversify and put about $60,000 into physical gold.
The whole process was way less daunting than I expected. I chose a company that specialized in Gold IRAs and they basically guided me through every step. I had an old 401k from a previous job – just sitting there, not really doing much. The company helped me initiate the direct rollover, which meant the funds went straight from my old custodian to the new one, avoiding any taxes or penalties. It took about two and a half weeks from start to finish, which felt pretty reasonable.
My biggest fear was getting hit with some hidden fees or making a mistake that would turn it into a taxable event. Thankfully, that didn't happen. The company was pretty transparent about their fees for storage and annual maintenance, which seemed comparable to what I'd heard from others. Now I've got actual physical gold coins sitting in a depository, which is a weirdly comforting thought. Anyone else feel that way after diversifying into precious metals?
I know $60k isn't a huge amount for some, but for my current portfolio size, it feels like a significant and strategic move. It's given me a lot more peace of mind, especially with all the economic uncertainty out there. For any other small business owners new to this, don't get intimidated – it's definitely manageable. What were your experiences like with your first rollover?
