My experience: SD-IRA and the traditional custodian headache (silver stackers, come commiserate)
- •When I first started kicking the tires on a Gold IRA, I seriously considered just going with a traditional custodian.
- •I mean, it seems easier on the surface, right?
- •Just hand over the reins, let them buy what they want, and file taxes.
I’ve been eyeing some serious allocations of silver bars, especially with the current geopolitical instability, and it got me thinking about the early days of building out my precious metals portfolio within my IRA. When I first started kicking the tires on a Gold IRA, I seriously considered just going with a traditional custodian. I mean, it seems easier on the surface, right? Just hand over the reins, let them buy what they want, and file taxes. Simple.
But man, am I glad I went down the self-directed route. For someone like me who's already got a good chunk of change tied up in various ventures and a pretty hands-on approach to my investments, the traditional custodian felt way too restrictive. I remember trying to get a straight answer from one of them about specific types of 100oz silver bars – whether it was COMEX approved, specific minting dates, etc. – and it was like pulling teeth. They just had a list of 'acceptable' products and that was it. No room for the really good stuff or reacting quickly to market opportunities.
With my SD-IRA, the control is just unparalleled. I can work directly with a dealer I trust – someone I've built a relationship with over years of 7-figure purchases – and direct the trustee to make the exact purchases I want, when I want them. It’s given me so much more peace of mind, knowing that I'm getting the precise silver bars I intend to hold for the long haul, rather than some generic "dealer's choice." Plus, the fee structures with some of those traditional places were just wild, especially once you get past the $500k mark. It felt like they were penalizing you for having a larger portfolio.
Another big thing for me, being here in Scottsdale, is being able to visit my depository (not my house, obviously) and physically inspect things from time to time. With a traditional custodian, that level of transparency and access is almost non-existent. It’s not just about the silver; it’s about the feeling of ownership and control over my own multi-million dollar retirement nest egg. For those of you with significant precious metals holdings in your IRA, did any of you start with a traditional custodian and then switch? What pushed you to make the jump, or what keeps you with one?
