Been meaning to post this for a while but finally got around to it. As a lot of you probably know, the market's been a wild ride lately. My portfolio is usually a pretty aggressive mix, and while that's paid off big in the past, with the current inflation fears and just general economic uncertainty, I've been feeling the itch to de-risk a bit. Had about $700k in my old 401k from a previous startup exit, and it was just sitting there, mostly in mutual funds.
After a bunch of research, I decided a Gold IRA was the way to go for part of it. The idea of having a physical, tangible asset outside of the traditional financial system just really resonated. I'm based in Austin, and while there are a few local places, I ended up going with one of the bigger online outfits that had a good reputation for transparency and customer service. The whole rollover process was surprisingly straightforward, honestly. I was expecting a bureaucratic nightmare, but it was nothing like that.
From the first call to getting the actual precious metals secured in the vault (which, side note, I actually went and visited – pretty cool experience), it took about three weeks. Paperwork was minimal, and the representative basically held my hand through every step. I moved about $250k of that 401k into gold and some silver bars, focusing mostly on American Gold Eagles and Canadian Maple Leafs for the gold, and some 10oz and 100oz silver bars for the silver. The peace of mind knowing that portion of my wealth is now diversified and physically backed is huge. I’m thinking about potentially adding more in the future if things continue to get shaky.
Anyone else here done a similar rollover recently? What were your biggest concerns going into it? And for those of you who've held precious metals for a while, any tips on monitoring the market or rebalancing strategies? Always good to hear from folks who've been in the game longer.
