My experience rolling 401k into a Gold IRA - not Silver, but same process

Just wrapped up the process of rolling over a substantial chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, and honestly, the peace of mind is pretty incredible. I’ve been building my precious metal portfolio for years, mostly physical, but getting this retirement money diversified feels like a huge weight lifted. For context, this was from an old company 401k that had about $1.2M in it. I moved about $750k into physical gold and kept the rest in more traditional investments for some liquidity, but I’m seriously considering moving more in the next year or two depending on how the market shakes out.
The process itself was surprisingly straightforward, though it took a little longer than I initially anticipated. From first contact with the custodian to having the metals actually in the depository, it was around 3 weeks. Most of that time was just waiting for the funds to transfer between institutions, followed by the actual purchase and shipping logistics. I worked with a firm out of Los Angeles, even though I'm here in Scottsdale, and they were excellent. Very transparent about fees, which I know can be a sticking point for some people, but for the security and long-term hedge, I consider it a worthy investment.
My reasoning was pretty simple: with the current economic climate and the insane government spending, I just don't trust the traditional markets to maintain their value in the way they have historically. Gold has been a store of wealth for millennia, and while it's not going to make you rich overnight, it's about capital preservation for me. It’s part of a broader strategy where I’m heavily invested in real estate and my own ventures, but I sleep better knowing a significant portion of my retirement isn't just numbers on a screen.
Anyone else gone through this recently? Any hiccups or unexpected charges? What were your primary motivations? Curious to hear other folks' experiences, especially if you moved into a Silver IRA instead – I considered it but opted for gold's stability this time around.
