Spent a solid week digging into IRA custodians for my metals, and let me tell you, it's a bit of a minefield out there. Coming from a background where precision and due diligence are paramount (30 years in the Navy will do that to you), I was really surprised by the lack of transparency with some of these operations. My current allocation for metals is sitting at about 12% of my portfolio – roughly $300k I'm looking to transfer into a new custodian, ideally by end of Q2.
My last custodian, which I won't name here, had some rather nebulous fee structures that seemed to fluctuate. It wasn't anything catastrophic, but enough to make me feel like I was constantly checking their math. I've narrowed down a few that seem promising – Equity Trust, Strata Trust, and Preferred Trust. Equity Trust seems to have the most comprehensive online portal, which is a plus for me given I like to stay on top of things, even here in Virginia Beach. Their fee structure also looks fairly straightforward, though I'm still working through their fine print.
What I'm really keen to hear are some real-world experiences. Has anyone had particularly good or bad interactions with these three, or perhaps another custodian I haven't even considered? Specifically, I'm looking for reliability in reporting, ease of asset transfer, and transparent, predictable fees for precious metals IRAs. Also, any insights on their customer service post-setup would be invaluable. I'm not looking for hand-holding, but when I need an answer, I expect a clear and concise one.
I’m particularly interested in hearing from folks who hold significant amounts – say, above the $250k mark – to see how they handle larger accounts. My current objective is long-term preservation of capital for my family, and this custodian selection is a critical piece of that puzzle. Thanks in advance for any insights you all can provide.
