My biggest Gold IRA mistake (don't be me, Albuquerque folks!)

Okay, so I’m a government employee here in Albuquerque, mid-40s, and I’ve been slowly building my Gold IRA for about three years now. Started with about $50k rolling over some old 401k funds, and it’s sitting pretty nicely around $75k now. The idea has always been to supplement my future pension, especially with all the talk about inflation and whatnot. I see a lot of new folks asking about getting started, and honestly, I made a pretty big rookie mistake early on that I really want to save someone else from.
My biggest screw-up was not properly vetting the custodian fees and storage costs upfront. I got so caught up in the "gold is safe" and "diversify!" hype that I skimmed over the nitty-gritty. I went with the first company that gave me a good sales pitch, and while their metal prices weren't terrible, their annual storage and administrative fees were just… ugh. I didn't realize until my second year when I actually sat down and crunched the numbers how much of a bite they were taking out of my gains. It’s not devastating, but it’s real money that could’ve been compounding.
I ended up transferring it all to a different custodian this year, which was another headache and involved its own set of fees, but the long-term savings made it worth it. For anyone just starting out, especially if you’re like me and relying on this to be a stable leg of your retirement, please, for the love of all that is shiny, scrutinize those fee schedules. Get a clear breakdown of everything: setup fees, annual maintenance, storage, and even potential liquidation fees. Don’t just look at the sales pitch for the metal itself.
Have any of you guys gone through something similar? What was your biggest "oops" moment with your precious metals IRA? Any other Albuquerque gold bugs out there? Would love to hear some other experiences or watch-outs.
