So I just got off the phone with my accountant, Ron – super sharp guy, always cuts through the BS. We were going over my portfolio, and naturally, my metals holdings came up. I’ve got a decent chunk in physical gold and silver, not just for the inflation hedge but because, come on, you can hold it. Unlike some crypto phantom-coin, right?
Anyway, I’m looking at around a $400k nest egg right now, mostly from my construction business, and Ron was explaining the ins and outs of rolling some of that over into a Gold IRA. He laid out how having the physical gold and silver in a self-directed IRA means the capital gains on those assets are tax-deferred or even tax-free if it’s a Roth. That's a huge deal for someone like me who's planning for the long haul. He was stressing how much difference that makes over decades, especially compared to just holding it outside of a tax-advantaged account. I’m thinking about moving another $50k or so of my traditional IRA into a Gold IRA this year, just to diversify even more and get that sweet tax break.
He also touched on Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) once I hit 73. Said it’s something to keep in mind, and that there are online tools like an RMD Calculator to help figure out what those distributions will look like from your Gold IRA. I haven't really thought that far ahead, but it's good to know there are resources to help map it out. It's kinda comforting knowing I'm not just blindly stashing metal away, but doing it in a way that's smart financially.
Any other Chicago-area investors here with experience converting a traditional IRA into a Gold IRA? What were your biggest takeaways or surprises? Always good to hear what other folks have run into.
