Hard to believe it's been five years since I first opened my Gold IRA. I remember feeling a bit anxious pulling the trigger, especially as someone who likes to keep things simple and local here in Boise. My initial investment was about $65,000, mostly in American Gold Eagles and some Canadian Gold Maple Leafs. I liked the idea of having physical assets in my retirement portfolio, something tangible, you know? As mayor, I'm always thinking about community stability, and gold just felt like a parallel to that – a bedrock asset.
Looking back, I'm genuinely pleased with how things have panned out. While I don't obsessively check the charts, the overall appreciation has been encouraging. It hasn't been a get-rich-quick scheme, which I never expected, but it's definitely outperformed some of my more traditional investments during certain market wobbles. I recall a period in late 2022 where having that gold felt like a real anchor when everything else was looking a bit shaky. It brings a certain peace of mind, especially with all the global unpredictability lately.
I'm now sitting on a portfolio closer to the $90,000 mark. It’s not retirement-defining money yet, but it's a solid part of my overall plan. I've mostly stuck with the larger denomination coins, wanting to maximize my gold content rather than paying premiums for smaller, more collectible items. I'm wondering if any of you have strong opinions on that strategy? Have you found value in diversifying into smaller gold coins or even some silver within your IRAs?
Another thing I’ve been mulling over is adding some platinum or palladium to the mix. Has anyone here had experience with those metals in their IRA, and how have they performed for you over the long term? I like the idea of further diversification, but I'm also hesitant to stray too far from what I understand well. Any insights from folks who've gone down that road would be greatly appreciated!
