My 5-Year Gold IRA Journey: Far Exceeded Expectations (even for a Gold Bug like me!)

Been seeing a lot of folks asking about their 401k rollovers into precious metals, and figured I'd share my own experience. It's been almost exactly five years since I fully pulled the trigger on a substantial gold IRA, and looking back, it's been one of the best financial decisions I've made post-retirement. I'd been watching the market for years, and after my last company acquisition wrapped up, I decided to move a hefty chunk – around $2.5 million – into physical gold, specifically American Gold Eagles and Canadian Gold Maples.
My financial advisor at the time (who I've since parted ways with, bless his heart) thought I was absolutely bonkers. He kept pushing mutual funds and some new tech ETFs. I'm sitting here in Palm Beach now, watching the news, and I gotta say, I feel pretty vindicated. The peace of mind alone has been worth it. Knowing a significant portion of my wealth isn't tied to the whims of the stock market or some potentially devaluing fiat currency? Priceless, truly. My original investment has seen some fantastic appreciation, comfortably outpacing inflation and pretty much everything my old advisor was pitching.
I track it pretty religiously, and even with the current volatility, the long-term trend is undeniable. We're talking solid, double-digit annualized returns here, which for a retired guy with a decent war chest already, is more than I could've asked for. It's like having this rock-solid foundation underneath all the other market noise. I even dipped my toes into some platinum in a separate account a couple of years ago, which has been interesting, but gold remains the core.
For those of you on the fence, especially if you've got a decent chunk sitting in an old 401k or traditional IRA, seriously look into this. Do your homework on custodians and storage, that's paramount. My storage fees are negligible compared to the gains. I'm curious, for others who've been in a gold IRA for a while, what kind of returns are you seeing? Are you as pleasantly surprised as I am?
