Hard to believe it's been five years since I first opened my Gold IRA. As a farmer's wife, I've always believed in tangible wealth you can hold in your hand, so the idea of physical gold in a retirement account just clicked for me. We've got land, we grow food – it's all real, you know? Figured my savings should be too, especially with all the ups and downs of the stock market. I started with about $50,000 back then, rolling over a significant chunk of a 401k from a teaching job I had before focusing on the farm full-time.
My initial investment was mostly in American Gold Eagles and a few Canadian Maple Leafs. Over the past five years, I've added a little more here and there when we had some extra cash from a good harvest, probably another $15,000 in contributions. Seeing the price of gold climb, especially these past couple of years, has been really validating. I'm no financial wizard, but I check my account statement every quarter and I've watched that initial $50k grow to just shy of $85,000 now. It’s not "get rich quick" money, but it feels like solid, steady growth that I can trust.
The peace of mind is probably the biggest return for me. Living in Independence, MO, we're not too far from some major financial hubs, but I always felt so disconnected from my investments when they were just numbers on a screen. Now, knowing there are actual bars and coins held securely for my future, it just feels... grounded. Especially with whispers of inflation and all the uncertainty in the world, having that tangible asset feels like a real anchor.
Has anyone else here been holding gold in their IRA for around five years or more? What's been your experience with the returns and the overall process? Any Kansas City area folks diversified into other precious metals too, like silver or platinum, and seen similar steady growth?
