My 5-year Gold IRA experience - pretty happy with the silver stack!

Thought I'd share my 5-year journey with my Gold IRA, since I see a lot of questions about them here. I got into it originally back in 2018 when I was still working as a bank manager here in Portland. Saw a lot of crazy stuff with interest rates and market volatility, and frankly, it made me nervous about having all my eggs in the traditional stock market basket. Decided to diversify with precious metals in an IRA, and ended up going with mostly silver bars – aiming for roughly 20-25% of my overall 401k rollover. My portfolio was sitting around the $300k mark back then, so we're talking a decent chunk in physical silver. It felt like a solid hedge against inflation and general economic uncertainty.
Fast forward to today, and honestly, I'm pretty pleased. The initial investment has done exactly what I hoped: provided stability. While some of my other investments have had their ups and downs (mostly ups, thankfully!), the silver has been a steady, reassuring presence. I didn't get into it expecting to get rich quick, but rather to protect my wealth, and it's absolutely delivered on that front. Seeing the price of silver fluctuate, sometimes significantly, definitely keeps things interesting. There's a real sense of security knowing I own a tangible asset, sitting there in a vault, rather than just numbers on a screen.
My strategy from the start was long-term wealth preservation, not speculation. I think that's key with these types of investments. If you're looking for quick gains, you're probably going to be disappointed or make some bad decisions. But if you view it as a foundational part of your retirement plan, something to offset market risk, then a Gold IRA (or in my case, mostly silver) is genuinely worth considering. The peace of mind alone for me has been worth it, especially given everything that's happened economically since 2020.
Curious to hear from others who've had their Gold IRAs for a similar timeframe. What's been your experience? Any regrets or things you'd done differently? What specific metals did you choose and why?
