Just hit my 5-year anniversary with my Gold IRA and decided to do a deeper dive into the numbers. Started this thing back in late 2018. Had a chunk of change from selling off a commercial property in Snowmass, and after consulting with my wealth manager (who usually rolls his eyes at my "precious metals obsession"), decided to move about $750k into a Gold IRA. Mostly wanted a hedge against the general insanity of the market and the sheer amount of money printing going on.

Fast forward to today, and that initial $750k is sitting pretty close to $1.15M. That's a roughly 53% return over five years, or around a 9% annualized gain. Not going to complain about that, especially considering the volatility over the same period in other asset classes. I know some of you tech bros out there probably made more on a meme stock in two weeks, but for tangible assets, I'm feeling pretty good. It's been a steady climb, with a few dips here and there, but nothing that's kept me up at night from my place up in Aspen.

My overall portfolio is north of $5M, and this Gold IRA represents a solid, foundational piece of that. I've been a developer for over 30 years, always had a soft spot for tangible assets – real estate, physical metals. This wasn't about getting rich quick, but more about preserving wealth and having a store of value that isn't tied to the whims of corporate balance sheets or geopolitical instability. It definitely smoothed out some of the bumps from my other investments. Anyone else hit a significant anniversary with their Gold IRA recently? Whatkind of returns are you seeing?

Glad to hear your experience has been positive! I'm seeing similar results with my portfolio, especially given the current economic climate. For folks nearing retirement and holding physical gold in their IRA, I've found the RMD Calculator at Gold IRA Blueprint super helpful for projecting my required minimum distributions – really takes the guesswork out of planning. Being in Tulsa, staying on top of those details is key for my retirement strategy.

That's awesome to hear! I'm genuinely considering a Gold IRA myself, and it's great to see positive long-term results like yours. I'm actually in a similar boat – got some funds from a property sale and my financial advisor, bless his heart, also gives me that 'side-eye' when I bring up gold. Good to know it can pay off despite the conventional wisdom sometimes!

That's awesome to hear about your positive experience! Out of curiosity, what percentage of your overall portfolio did you initially allocate to the Gold IRA when you started it back in 2018?

Glad to hear it's worked out for you! I'm a bit more skeptical on the "pretty happy with the results" part, though. 2018 was a pretty good time to get into gold, all things considered. It's been a strong bull run since then, and it'd be hard *not* to see some gains. The real test for gold as a long-term inflation hedge or safe haven is when the market gets choppy and other assets are taking a hit. Hopefully, it continues to serve you well!

Awesome to hear you're happy with your Gold IRA! 5 years is a solid run. For anyone else looking to get started, I found this Investopedia guide super helpful when I was doing my research. It breaks down the pros, cons, and different companies really well. Always good to do your homework!

Glad to hear you're seeing good returns! I started my Gold IRA journey about 3 years ago here in Minneapolis, and honestly, the initial research felt a bit overwhelming with all the different providers. What really helped me narrow down my options and gave me the confidence to pick a company was checking out the Best Gold IRA Companies tool on Gold IRA Blueprint – it breaks down fees and services really well. I'm currently sitting on around a 15% gain on my initial $150k investment, which I'm pretty stoked about, especially with inflation doing its thing.

Glad to see another positive Gold IRA experience here. I started my own back in '08 with Augusta Precious Metals, initially just a hedge against the financial crisis, and it's been a cornerstone of my portfolio ever since. Watching it ride out the market fluctuations over the last 15 years has reinforced my belief in tangible assets, especially when the paper markets start looking a little shaky.

That's awesome to hear about your positive experience! I'm closing in on my 7th year with my gold IRA, and it’s been a significant anchor for my retirement savings. Especially living in Lexington, where things can fluctuate, having a solid chunk of my portfolio in precious metals has offered immense peace of mind, especially after my 401k rollover. The tax advantages are just the icing on the cake, truly.

Glad to hear it! I started my Gold IRA around the same time, maybe 2019, with about $150k because I was getting nervous with the market volatility right before COVID. Living here in Louisville, it was a solid move for me. For anyone still on the fence about asset allocation, I found the Silver vs Stocks comparison particularly insightful over at goldirablueprint.com – definitely helped me cement my strategy.

Glad to hear it! I'm just getting started with my own Gold IRA, opened it up this past January with about $120k from an old 401k. I'm wondering if you diversified much beyond just gold, like into silver or platinum, or if you stuck mostly to the yellow stuff? Trying to figure out the best approach down here in Jax.

Dude, I could have written this post myself! Seriously, that five-year mark really solidified my conviction in precious metals. I started my Gold IRA back in late 2018 with a good chunk of change, about $150k, and seeing the growth, especially through some of those wild economic swings, has been *super* reassuring. It’s not about getting rich quick, but that steady, reliable hedge has let me sleep like a baby here in SLC.

@Ronald Morris - Good to hear you've had a solid run with Augusta. I'm actually in Dallas and went with Lear Capital around the same time, also for that '08 hedge. While I've certainly seen appreciation on my initial **$250k allocation**, I sometimes wonder if I leaned a little too heavily into gold given some of the tech gains I've missed since then. It's a tricky balance between risk mitigation and growth, isn't it?

Glad to hear your experience has been positive! I'm in Honolulu, and I've been really happy with my gold IRA too, especially seeing how volatile the market has been these past few years. It's truly been a cornerstone of my retirement savings, offering some much-needed stability compared to my old 401k. The peace of mind knowing a portion of my portfolio is in tangible precious metals, with those sweet tax advantages, is invaluable.

Seriously, this is the kind of detailed breakdown I've been hoping someone would post. My physical gold holdings in Omaha have done well, but seeing your 5-year Gold IRA performance, especially with those specific figures, really reinforces my decision to diversify further with a Gold IRA two years ago. I'm feeling a lot more confident about holding strong given your positive experience.

I've got about $180k in my Gold IRA here in Tampa, been in it since late 2019, and honestly, the "pretty happy with the results" sentiment feels a little... complacent? Don't get me wrong, it's been a solid hedge, and I sleep better knowing a chunk of my retirement isn't tied to the whims of the stock market. But looking at the growth some of my buddies are seeing in tech and even certain real estate plays right now, sometimes I wonder if "safe and steady" is just a fancy way of saying "missing out." It's great for stability, absolutely, but let's not pretend it's a get-rich-quick scheme or even a "get rich reasonably fast" scheme compared to other options.

This is an incredibly helpful rundown! I pulled the trigger on a Gold IRA about two years ago, right when things were getting dicey with inflation concerns. My ~$75k portfolio has weathered some storms I think, and it's nice to see someone else from the southeast (Raleigh, here!) sharing their positive experience. Thanks for taking the time to detail it all out.

That's fantastic to hear! My journey with a Gold IRA started back in 2018, just after my eldest headed off to Choate. I'd been watching the markets, of course, and the volatility just felt...unsettling for long-term wealth preservation. I ultimately rolled over about $750k from a less diversified traditional IRA into physical gold and silver, and honestly, the peace of mind alone has been worth its weight in, well, gold. Seeing how things have played out since then, especially with inflation concerns, it feels like one of the soundest decisions I've made for our family's future.

@Carol Carter Definitely agree on the performance. My gold IRA has been a cornerstone of my retirement savings here in San Diego, especially after I did a 401k rollover about five years back. The security and tax advantages of holding precious metals have really paid off – it's a solid hedge against inflation and market volatility.

Glad to hear your 5-year experience has been positive! I've been in a Gold IRA for about seven years now myself, originally rolled over an old 401k into it. It's been a real anchor for my portfolio, especially with all the market volatility we've seen since 2020. I remember checking the spot price during those early pandemic months and feeling a lot calmer knowing a good chunk of my retirement was insulated. Definitely makes me sleep better at night here in Albuquerque.

Just read your post, that's great to hear about your returns. I started my Gold IRA with a smaller chunk, around $75k, back in 2021 when I saw inflation starting to really pick up here in Colorado. Did you ever consider adding silver to your IRA for diversification, or did you stick purely with gold? I've been debating that move for my next contribution.

    catherine_bell🏆Advanced (250-500k)Real Investorabout 2 months ago

@Jason Morgan That's fantastic you got into a Gold IRA! I started mine back in 2018 with about $280k from a couple of old retirement accounts. I did diversify a bit, mostly into silver (about 15% of my physical metals are silver Eagles and Maples) and then a tiny sliver, maybe 5%, into some platinum, which felt a bit more speculative. My main advice: don't forget to keep an eye on storage fees; they can add up, especially with smaller portfolios, so make sure your annual fee isn't eating too much into your gains.

@William Davis - I appreciate you sharing your Lear Capital experience. I remember looking at them back in '08 when I was vetting custodians. I ended up going with American Hartford Gold after their rep, Brenda, really walked me through the whole rollover process from my old 401k. I was just outside of Providence then, watching the housing market absolutely crater, and I knew I needed something tangible. I put in about $70k, mostly in Eagles and a few Krugerrands. It's been a reassuring feeling, especially seeing how things have unfolded globally since then. Still holding strong!

@Carol Carter - That's fantastic to hear about your Omaha holdings and your interest in the breakdown! While I certainly understand the appeal of those 5-year numbers, and my own Gold IRA here in Chicago has seen some decent appreciation, I've personally found that the *true* value for me came during the periods of market volatility. For example, back in early 2020, when the broader market was taking a beating, the stability of my gold holdings really softened the blow to my overall portfolio, which is harder to quantify than pure percentage gains.

@Helen Turner That's interesting to hear, and I'm glad it worked out well for you! I also started my Gold IRA around 2019, with a similar amount of about $175k, but here in Savannah, I found the initial setup experience a bit more... cumbersome. I totally get the pre-COVID market jitters though, that was definitely a motivator for me too. While the stability has been nice, I'm still weighing the opportunity cost of having a significant chunk of my portfolio in non-performing assets versus some of the growth I've seen elsewhere in the market since.

@Betty King - Awesome to hear your Gold IRA is performing! That ~$75k portfolio two years ago was a smart move. I actually jumped in a little earlier, around five years ago, with roughly $150k when I saw the housing market here in Vegas getting a bit… frothy again. My gut told me to diversify out of paper assets and into something tangible, and honestly, seeing the current inflation numbers, I'm feeling pretty vindicated. While it hasn't been a rocket ship, the stability has definitely allowed me to sleep better at night knowing a chunk of my retirement isn't directly tied to the whims of the DOW.

Glad to hear it! I'm in SF too, and honestly, gold has been a significant hedge in my portfolio over the last few years, especially with all the tech stock volatility we've seen. Diversifying about 10-15% of my 401k into a Gold IRA a couple of years back was one of the best financial moves I've made. That's awesome to hear about your 5-year experience! I'm just getting my feet wet with a Gold IRA, moved a chunk of my 401k over last year – about $150k. I'm in Detroit and saw the auto industry ups and downs over the decades, so diversification feels really good right now. I'm still learning, but the Gold vs Stocks 10-year comparison really puts things in perspective; it helped push me to make the leap. What's one thing you wish you knew when you started that you know now?

Glad to hear you're happy with your returns, but honestly, "pretty happy" still feels a little… *safe* for me. My Gold IRA certainly hasn't been the flashiest part of my portfolio since 2020, even with the run-up. While my friends down here in Memphis were chasing meme stocks and making (and losing) fortunes, my physical gold delivery felt more like buying insurance than building wealth.

Totally relate to this! I started my gold IRA about three years ago, doing a 401k rollover for a good chunk of my retirement savings – around $75k from my old tech job in Fresno. The peace of mind knowing a portion of my portfolio is in tangible precious metals, especially with all the economic uncertainty, is invaluable. Plus, the tax advantages are a sweet bonus I didn't fully appreciate until my first filing.

@Janet Cook - It's interesting how many of us were doing our due diligence around the '08 crash. I had a similar experience, though I ended up going with Augusta Precious Metals. They weren't the *absolute cheapest* on fees, but their transparency and the dedicated account rep, Sarah, really sold me. Living in Seattle, I'd seen too many tech bubbles burst and wanted something genuinely tangible. After watching my 401k dip significantly then, getting a chunk of my retirement, about $70k at the time, into physical gold felt like a much-needed anchor. Fast forward to today, with all the inflation scares and global instability, seeing that part of my portfolio hold steady, even grow a bit, has been incredibly reassuring. Still sleep better at night knowing it's not all tied to the whims of the market.

@RobertThompson I appreciate the sentiment, but honestly, "pretty happy" feels like an understatement if you're holding solid physical gold in an IRA over the last five years. While everyone's chasing the next meme stock or tech bubble, I've had the distinct pleasure of watching my gold holdings, acquired mostly in the late 2010s, consistently outperform frankly most of my other alternative assets. Call me old-fashioned living down here in Palm Beach, but sometimes the oldest safe hasn't rusted yet.
