Just went through the whole 401k to Gold IRA rollover process, and honestly, felt like sharing my experience because I was super nervous about the timeline going in. Always good to hear real-world stuff, right?
My goal is to retire early – hoping to pull it off by 55 – and I've been really trying to diversify my portfolio beyond just stocks and bonds, especially with all the economic uncertainty out there. Had about $200k in an old 401k from a previous job that was just sitting there, not doing much for me. Decided a Gold IRA was the way to go for some inflation hedging and stability. I'm based in Minneapolis, and after a lot of research into different custodians and precious metals dealers, I finally pulled the trigger.
The whole thing from initiating contact with the new custodian to the gold actually being in my account took about 3 weeks. The longest part was definitely the initial back-and-forth with my old 401k provider to get them to release the funds. Once the check was issued (which they sent directly to my new Gold IRA custodian, thank goodness – avoided a huge tax headache there!), the rest was super quick. The custodian received it, processed it, and had the gold purchased and allocated within a few business days. I was actually pretty impressed with the communication throughout the process too; felt like I knew what was happening at every step.
Anyone else go through this recently? How long did yours take? Any unexpected hiccups or was it as smooth as mine? I'm curious if my experience is typical or if I just got lucky with a well-oiled machine.
