Okay, so I finally pulled the trigger on rolling over a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I’m a young professional here in Charleston, just getting started with serious retirement planning (got about $30k in my whole portfolio right now, trying to be smart about it early). I'd been reading a lot about diversification and decided a Gold IRA made sense for a portion of my assets, especially with all the economic uncertainty floating around.
The whole process so far has been a bit of a rollercoaster, honestly. I started getting quotes and talking to different companies about 3 weeks ago. Opted for one that seemed pretty reputable and had good transparent fee structures. The actual transfer request from my old 401k administrator took about a week to process once I submitted all the paperwork. Then it felt like another 5-7 business days for the funds to actually hit the Gold IRA custodian. Now, I’m in the "waiting for the metals to be purchased and shipped to the depository" phase, which they said could be another 5-10 business days. It feels like forever, even though I know it's a big transaction!
The company I went with said the whole thing, from initial paperwork to metals securely stored, usually takes 2-4 weeks. I’m currently at the end of week 3, so I guess I’m still within that window, but man, I just want to see that confirmation everything’s settled. Has anyone else done this recently? What was your timeline like from start to finish? Did you experience any unexpected delays?
Mostly just looking for some reassurance or to hear others' experiences. The idea of having a tangible asset helping to protect my future savings feels really good, but this waiting game is killing me. Any thoughts or advice from those who've been through it?
