Okay, so I finally pulled the trigger on a full 401k to Gold IRA transfer, and the timeline has me a little antsy. I’m a lawyer here in Philadelphia, and honestly, wealth preservation is my #1 priority right now – especially with the way things are going. I had about $750k in my old employer’s 401k, and after a lot of research, decided to move a significant chunk of it into physical gold. I’m thinking long-term here, not trying to get rich quick.
I initiated the rollover process about three weeks ago. My Gold IRA custodian was pretty on top of it, got all the paperwork squared away, and sent the transfer requests to my old 401k administrator. That’s where things seem to be dragging. I’ve been calling them religiously, and it feels like I’m constantly getting the runaround or being told, "It’s in processing." I get that these things take time, but every day that money isn't in a safe haven feels like a day it's exposed to more risk. Has anyone else experienced this kind of delay with their old 401k provider? Is three weeks about average for the initial transfer to even leave the old account?
My main concern is just making sure everything is done correctly and that I'm not going to run into any unexpected tax implications. I used that Eligibility Checker tool before I started, which was helpful for confirming I even qualified, but the actual transfer logistics are a whole other beast. The custodian has been reassuring, but I'm still feeling a bit out of my depth on this particular part of the process. I’m considering calling my old plan administrator daily if I don’t see movement by the end of this week, but I don’t want to be that client.
Once the funds hit the new Gold IRA account, I understand there’s still the process of actually allocating and purchasing the precious metals, which will add a few more days. For those of you who’ve gone through this, what was your total end-to-end timeline from initiating the rollover to having the metals secured? Any tips on speeding up the old 401k administrator?
