Just wanting to share my experience with transferring part of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, especially for anyone else considering this. It’s been about 6 months now since I got everything finalized, and honestly, the peace of mind is worth every single step. My late husband was always so careful with our finances, and protecting his legacy is so important to me. That’s why I decided to diversify a chunk – roughly $75,000 – of what was sitting in an old employer's 401k.
The whole process, from initial contact with the Gold IRA company to actually having the physical gold secured in the depository, took about 4-5 weeks. The longest part was definitely getting my old 401k provider to release the funds. They needed a lot of paperwork signed and re-signed, and there were a few back-and-forths over some missing information. It felt like they were deliberately dragging their feet, which was pretty frustrating. Once the funds were finally rolled over to the new custodian, the actual purchase and shipping of the gold rounds to the depository went surprisingly fast – maybe a week and a half for that part.
I ended up going with a mix of Gold American Eagles and some generic gold rounds, mostly for the slightly lower premium on the rounds. Living here in Raleigh, I did some research into local places, but ultimately felt more comfortable with one of the larger, national Gold IRA companies for the transfer and storage. They just seemed to have more experience with these kinds of rollovers.
My question for those who've done this before: how often do you check in on your Gold IRA account? I know it’s for long-term protection and not something to day trade, but sometimes I get a little antsy and want to log in and look. Is there a "right" amount of keeping an eye on it? Just curious about others' habits and experiences once the initial transfer is all done.
