Just wrapped up my 401k to Gold IRA transfer and thought I'd share the timeline for anyone else looking into this. I had a significant chunk from an old 401k at a dairy plant I was at for almost 25 years – probably around $600k that I just couldn't stomach leaving in the market with all this inflation. Decided it was time to put some of it into something real you can actually hold.
From my first call with Augusta Precious Metals (after doing a lot of looking around, including some of those free guides everyone talks about) to getting the confirmation that the gold was secured in the depository, it was about three and a half weeks. Here’s the breakdown:
- Week 1: Initial consultations, getting all my questions answered about the process, fees, storage, etc. They sent me the paperwork, which honestly, wasn't too bad. Lots of signatures, but pretty straightforward.
- Week 2: Sent all the signed docs back. They initiated the rollover request with my old 401k provider. This is where I was expecting a headache, but Augusta actually handled most of the back-and-forth. My old provider was a little slow, but not terrible.
- Week 3: The funds officially hit the new IRA account. Then the fun part – choosing the actual metals. I went with a mix of gold and a little silver, mostly coins. Didn't mess with any fancy collector stuff; just wanted the tangible asset.
- Mid-Week 3.5: Got confirmation of the purchase and shortly after, notification that it was on its way to the Delaware Depository.
Overall, pretty smooth. I was a bit anxious about moving that much money, but it felt secure throughout the whole deal. Living in Madison, WI, you hear a lot of folks talking about diversifying, especially with farming and commodity prices being what they are. This just felt like a sensible move. Anyone else go through a similar timeline? Was your old 401k provider a pain to deal with?
