My 401k to Gold IRA transfer - longer than I hoped, but glad I did it.
- •Just went through the whole 401k to Gold IRA rodeo, and wanted to share my experience with the timeline for anyone thinking about it.
- •For full context, I moved about $1.5M out of an old 401k from a company I sold a few years back.
- •Had it sitting in market funds, and frankly, the volatility was starting to give me heartburn, especially with the way things are going globally.
Just went through the whole 401k to Gold IRA rodeo, and wanted to share my experience with the timeline for anyone thinking about it. For full context, I moved about $1.5M out of an old 401k from a company I sold a few years back. Had it sitting in market funds, and frankly, the volatility was starting to give me heartburn, especially with the way things are going globally. Plus, I’ve got some pretty significant physical gold and silver holdings already, so it felt like a natural extension to get more of my retirement assets into something tangible.
From the moment I initiated the rollover with the Gold IRA company to when the funds actually settled and the metals were purchased, it took just under six weeks. I was hoping for something closer to a month, but apparently, my old 401k administrator was about as quick as molasses in January. Lots of paperwork back and forth, multiple phone calls, and more than a few days just waiting for faxes (yes, faxes in 2024, I know). The Gold IRA company was great on their end, really pushing things along, but there’s only so much you can do when the other side is dragging their feet. Honestly, if you're dealing with one of the big, older custodians, just brace yourself for some bureaucratic slowness. My advice? Get everything signed and submitted ASAP, and then follow up relentlessly.
I ended up allocating about 70% into various gold coins – mostly American Gold Eagles and Canadian Maple Leafs, with a smaller portion in some European low-premium options. The remaining 30% went into silver. The metal acquisition itself, once the funds landed, was surprisingly fast – maybe a week and a half for everything to be sourced, bought, and sent to the depository. Living up here in Aspen, I like knowing it's safely tucked away and not going to disappear in some digital meltdown.
My biggest takeaway is just to have patience, but also to be proactive. If I hadn't been on the phone every other day, I think it could have stretched out even longer. Overall, though, feeling good about diversifying further. The peace of mind is worth the hassle. Out of curiosity, for those of you who have done similar rollovers, what was your timeline like? And how much of your portfolio did you end up moving?
P.S. If you're trying to figure out what your potential returns could look like with a Gold IRA, or just want to crunch some numbers before making the leap, check out that Gold IRA Calculator. Helped me visualize what my new holdings might do over time, which was pretty motivating.
