My 401k to Gold IRA Rollover - smoother than milking 100 cows

Just finished up rolling over a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA, and honestly, it was way less of a headache than I thought it'd be. I've been in dairy my whole life, you know, practical, no-nonsense kind of guy. So when my financial advisor (who I've been with for about 15 years now, good guy) suggested diversifying a bit out of just paper assets, I was skeptical. But after seeing how volatile things have been, especially with inflation eating away at everything, hard assets started sounding pretty good.
Ended up moving about $350k. It was from an old 401k from a processing plant I used to manage before I retired from that gig a few years back. The new place (still consulting for some smaller farms around Madison) had a different setup, so it was just sitting there, not really doing much for me. The whole process took about three weeks from start to finish. Lot of paperwork, as you'd expect, but the company I went with (won't name them here, don't wanna shill) was pretty good about guiding me. They even helped me track down some of the old account info which was buried deep. Main thing was just making sure all the transfers were direct custodian-to-custodian to avoid any tax nasty surprises.
Feeling a good deal more secure having some of my retirement in something tangible. With my 70th birthday coming up in a few years, I'm already thinking about those Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs). Heard about this RMD Calculator thing online – looks pretty handy for figuring out what I'll need to pull out. Has anyone here used it?
Anyone else around here gone through a similar rollover recently? Any unforeseen snags or things you wish you knew going in? Always good to hear local experiences too – Wisconsin specific advice is always appreciated!
