Just wrapped up a full rollover from my old 401k into a Gold IRA, and wanted to share my experience for those of you contemplating it. I had about $375k sitting in an old employer's plan that was just stagnant, and honestly, the thought of inflation eating away at it kept me up at night. Been hearing a lot about gold and silver being a good hedge, especially with all the economic uncertainty, and as someone in Salt Lake, I've seen plenty of folks around here really leaning into precious metals. Made the call to finally move it over.
The actual rollover process itself was surprisingly straightforward. I worked with a firm that specializes in this, and they handled most of the paperwork. The custodian they suggested was pretty on top of things. The only hiccup was a slight delay with my old 401k provider; felt like they were dragging their feet a bit, probably trying to get me to keep the funds with them, haha. But once that was sorted, the funds hit the new Gold IRA account within a week. I opted for a mix of gold American Eagles and some 1 oz gold rounds. I'm bullish on gold rounds right now – feel like they offer a good balance of liquidity and low premiums compared to some other options. Anyone else have a strong preference for rounds?
The physical delivery was pretty cool too – seeing those heavy boxes arrive, knowing that's my retirement secured in real assets, was a good feeling. Definitely a different vibe than just seeing numbers on a screen. My financial advisor, who actually got me thinking about this whole thing, was super helpful throughout. He’s been working with a lot of clients on gold IRAs lately, and it’s clear why – peace of mind is worth a lot. I’ve probably spent hours over the last few months just digging through research to make sure this was the right move for me, and one of the best resources I found, especially for understanding the different types of precious metals and the tax implications, was the Learning Center. Seriously, if you're on the fence, spend some time there.
So, now that it's done, I feel a lot more secure. I know gold isn't going to make me rich overnight, but it feels like a solid foundation for my retirement, especially as I inch closer to that half-million mark in my overall portfolio. What are your thoughts on holding a significant portion of your IRA in physical gold? Any long-term gold investors out there with advice for someone relatively new to this?
