Just wanted to share my experience with rolling over a chunk of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I’ve been running my tourism business here in Savannah for a solid 15 years, and let me tell you, I've seen my fair share of economic tides both high and low. Always been a bit of a contrarian when it comes to investments, and with all the market volatility lately, the thought of having some physical assets outside the traditional paper stuff really started to appeal.
I had about $180k sitting in an old employer's 401k from way back, just collecting dust and, frankly, I wasn't thrilled with the performance. After a lot of research into different companies – and believe me, there are a lot of options out there, some sketchier than others – I decided to go with Augusta Precious Metals. They seemed to have the most straightforward process and their customer service reviews were pretty stellar. The whole thing from initial call to seeing the metals in storage took about three weeks. Honestly, that was a bit longer than I expected, but I guess it’s a good thing they’re thorough. The main hiccup was just some back-and-forth with the old 401k administrator – they weren't exactly efficient. Had to make a few extra calls to them to nudge things along.
I ended up allocating about 60% of that $180k into gold American Eagles and 40% into silver Canadian Maples. I like the idea of having some diversification even within the precious metals. The peace of mind knowing a good portion of my retirement savings isn’t just numbers on a screen has been huge. Especially being a small business owner, that extra layer of security feels essential. I’m thinking about adding another $50k or so next year, depending on how things shake out. Did anyone else here go through a 401k rollover recently? What was your experience like? Any particular companies or metals you'd recommend looking into for a second round?
