My 401k to Gold IRA Rollover - Smooth as Silk with a Few Lessons Learned
- •Just finished up a full rollover of an old 401k from a previous company (a smaller, regional one I offloaded a few years back) into a Gold IRA.
- •The process itself was surprisingly straightforward.
- •I worked with Augusta Precious Metals (heard good things, and their fees seemed reasonable compared to a few others I looked at).
Just finished up a full rollover of an old 401k from a previous company (a smaller, regional one I offloaded a few years back) into a Gold IRA. Had about $850k in there, and frankly, I was getting heartburn watching BlackRock and Vanguard take a bath on some positions over the last 18 months. My main portfolio is already pretty heavy into hard assets – mostly commercial real estate and a good chunk of physical metals in a vault, but this 401k was sitting there, exposed, felt like a liability.
The process itself was surprisingly straightforward. I worked with Augusta Precious Metals (heard good things, and their fees seemed reasonable compared to a few others I looked at). My rep was solid, walked me through the paperwork, and even helped deal with the archaic transfer department at the old 401k administrator. Seriously, those guys acted like they were still using fax machines exclusively. Took about 3 weeks from initiating the request to seeing the funds fully settled and allocated to actual physical gold and silver eagles in the depository. I was pretty specific about wanting Eagles for the liquidity, even if the premium is a touch higher.
My big takeaway? Don't wait. I should've done this six months ago when the market started showing its teeth. I'm sitting here in Aspen, watching the news, and it just reinforces my belief in tangible assets right now. The thought of that $850k being locked into paper assets felt like I was playing roulette with a significant portion of my retirement. Anyone else feeling that same pull towards more tangible holdings with all the global instability?
For those who've done similar rollovers, what was your experience with the timeline and the various custodians? And for those considering it, what's holding you back? Just curious about others' perspectives on this.
