Just looking for some shared experiences here. I finally pulled the trigger on rolling over a portion of my old 401k into a Gold IRA. I’ve been a nurse here in Seattle for over 20 years, seen a lot, and the economic uncertainty lately just really pushed me to diversify away from the stock market. I always recommend caution and preparation to my patients, and it's time I fully applied that to my own finances too, especially with retirement getting closer. I rolled over about $75k, keeping a good chunk in my current 401k, but feeling good about having some physical assets now.

I started the process about two weeks ago. I’ve filled out all the paperwork from the Gold IRA company, and they said they've sent over the requests to my old 401k provider. I even followed up with the 401k company myself to make sure they got everything. They said they're processing it, but it just feels like it's taking forever. I'm not really stressed yet, but part of me just wants to see that gold in the depository and know it's done. I'm usually pretty patient, but this is my retirement we're talking about!

Anyone here been through a similar direct rollover from a 401k? How long did it actually take from start to finish? Did you have to nudge either party much? Just trying to get a realistic timeline of what to expect. My Gold IRA company was super helpful getting me started, but now that the ball is in the court of the old 401k provider, I feel a bit in the dark.

Hey, I hear you! I did a similar rollover last year with an old 401k from a tech job. It felt like forever, but from when I initiated the paperwork to actually seeing the gold in my account (or, well, the confirmation it was safely stored), it was about 4-5 weeks. There were a few back-and-forth emails for signatures and clarifying details, but generally smooth. Hang in there, it'll get done!

Congrats on making the move! It's definitely a smart play with all the craziness these days. Quick question though – when you say "a portion" of your 401k, are you doing a direct rollover or an indirect one? I've heard that can sometimes affect the timeline.

Hey, that's awesome you're taking steps to diversify! While a lot of people focus on the timeline of the rollover itself, I think it's also worth considering the long-term storage and insurance aspects of your physical gold. I've heard some stories where those details took longer to iron out than the actual transfer of funds, and you want to make sure it's all secure and above board. Keep an eye on those logistics too!

That's awesome you're taking steps to diversify! It really varies, but typically, a 401k to Gold IRA rollover can take anywhere from 2-6 weeks depending on how quickly your old plan administrator processes the paperwork. Sometimes it's faster, sometimes a bit slower if there are any hiccups.

One tip: make sure you're regularly checking in with both your old 401k provider and your new Gold IRA custodian. A little nudge can sometimes speed things along! You can also check out resources like Investopedia or NerdWallet; they often have articles detailing the rollover process and timelines that might give you a better idea of what to expect. Good luck!
