Just finished up a major chunk of my 401k rollover into a self-directed Gold IRA, and man, what a ride. Been investing in gold for over 20 years now – physical stacks at home, some ETFs, but this was my first real plunge into a dedicated IRA for metals. With everything going on in the world, and especially seeing what happened to my pension during the auto industry downturn years back, holding a significant portion of my retirement in something tangible just feels right. Diversification is key after all the ups and downs I've seen.
The company I went with (not gonna shill anyone particular, but they had pretty good reviews) made the rollover process sound like a breeze. "Paperwork, a few signatures, done!" they said. In reality, it was a lot more back-and-forth between them, my old 401k administrator, and my bank. Took about six weeks end-to-end, which felt like an eternity when I was sitting on roughly $350k that was supposed to be moving. Every time I thought it was done, there was another form or a signature that somehow got missed. Had a couple of mild heart attacks checking if the funds had actually landed where they were supposed to. Eventually, it all squared away, and a good chunk of that money is now sitting in actual physical gold, held by a custodian.
Honestly, the peace of mind is worth the hassle. Living here in Detroit, I've seen firsthand how quickly things can change, and having that security outside of the traditional stock market feels like a smart move. My gold holdings overall are probably around 20-25% of my total portfolio now, including the smaller amounts I've been collecting over the years. Are any of you other long-time gold investors finding similar issues with rollovers, or did I just get unlucky with the specific companies involved? Thinking about doing another smaller rollover next year, but hoping it goes smoother.
