My 401k to Gold IRA Rollover - A Timeline
Hey everyone, wanted to share my recent experience with a 401k to Gold IRA rollover, especially for those of you who might be on the fence or just starting to look into it. I’ve been running my little import-export business here in El Paso for going on 12 years now, and with all the economic chatter, especially regarding inflation and global uncertainties, I decided it was high time to diversify my retirement savings. My abuela always told me, "Oro es oro, no matter where you are, Laura," and that really resonated when I was watching the news about the dollar.
So, back in late January, I made the decision to move a portion of my old 401k – roughly $75,000 – into a Gold IRA. I contacted a few different companies after doing some online research. The first call was on January 25th, and after a couple of consultations, I decided on a company by February 5th. They were super helpful walking me through the paperwork for the direct rollover. That was probably the most time-consuming part, getting all the forms filled out correctly and sent back. I think I spent about 3 hours over two evenings on that.
Once the paperwork was submitted and my old 401k administrator got everything squared away, the actual transfer felt pretty quick. The funds officially left my old 401k on February 20th, and by February 27th, they were in my new Gold IRA account. Then came the exciting part: selecting the actual precious metals. I worked with the Gold IRA company to pick out some eligible coins and bars. Those were shipped out on March 3rd and arrived at the secure depository on March 7th! So, from my initial decision to the metals being safely stored, it was just under six weeks – 42 days total. Not bad, right?
I know everyone's situation is unique, and timelines can vary depending on your old employer’s plan administrator or the Gold IRA company you choose. But I thought sharing my timeline and specific numbers might give some of you a better idea of what to expect. Have any of you recently done a rollover? What was your experience like? Did you run into any unexpected delays? I'm curious to hear your stories!
