Okay, so I've been kicking around the idea of diversifying some of my retirement funds into a Gold IRA for a while now. My current portfolio is sitting pretty at around $220k, mostly in tech stocks and some local real estate ventures I've got going on here in El Paso. I've always been one to keep an eye on what's happening south of the border, and let me tell you, that cross-cultural perspective has made me a big believer in hedging against… well, everything. The volatility just seems to be getting crazier every year, and my gut tells me gold needs to be part of the equation.
My main hang-up right now is understanding the actual minimum investment requirements most companies are looking for. I know it varies wildly, but I'm trying to get a realistic picture so I'm not wasting my time with calls. Are we talking $10k, $25k, $50k to even get your foot in the door with a reputable outfit? I can certainly allocate a decent chunk, probably in the $30k-$50k range to start, but I don't want to get hit with some crazy high minimum that essentially locks out someone like me who's pretty established but not a multi-millionaire.
Also, when you guys were setting yours up, did you find that the minimums were more negotiable if you were talking about a larger initial transfer? Or are they pretty much set in stone? I'm particularly interested in hearing from anyone who might have done this in a similar portfolio range or maybe even from fellow border-town entrepreneurs – we tend to see things a bit differently, I think. I've been doing my homework, even checking out those "Gold vs Stocks Comparison" tools like the one at this link for comparing gold's performance over the last 10 years, and it just reinforces my conviction. Gold coins are my preference, so any insights related to those specifically would be awesome too.
