Been seeing a few posts about getting started with Gold IRAs and the common question always seems to be about minimum investments. Just wanted to share my experience, hope it helps someone out there!
Working as a secretary for an oil company here in Tulsa, I've had the good fortune to pick up more than a few tips from the execs over the years when it comes to diversifying and protecting wealth. Gold was always a recurring theme, especially when things felt shaky in the market. About three years ago, I decided to pull the trigger on a Gold IRA for a portion of my retirement savings. My portfolio was sitting around the $150k mark at the time, and I really wanted to get some physical assets in there.
From what I gathered (and this can vary widely by custodian, so definitely shop around!), the "official" minimums often start somewhere around $10k to $25k. However, I found that many companies preferred a higher commitment, sometimes pushing for $30k or even $50k to make the setup and ongoing fees worthwhile for them. I ended up going with a company that had a $25k minimum to open the account, which felt manageable for me. I initially rolled over about $30k from an old 401k. The process was surprisingly smooth, though the paperwork was a bit of a beast.
My advice? Don't just look at the advertised minimum. Talk to a few different custodians and see what they really want to see as an initial deposit, and what their fee structure looks like for different account sizes. Sometimes a slightly higher initial investment qualifies you for lower annual fees or waived setup costs. Has anyone else found this to be true, or did you find custodians that were happy with lower starting points?
